Could Saffron Extract Be Your Dieting Saviour? | Gnet Health and ...

Saffron, with its golden, delicately flavoured threads, has been a highly-prized spice for hundreds of years. Derived from the stigma of the crocus plant, it is native to Europe, and now cultivated worldwide to meet huge culinary demands. In food it lends a beautiful yellow colour, and a subtle flavour, but now, it is being used for something more than just a culinary embellishment. Recent studies have suggested that saffron, in a more concentrated form, may actually be a very effective appetite suppressant, and be a key to successful dieting.

Saffron Extract

In 2010, a study was conducted that took 60 women, from ages 25-45, half of whom displayed tendencies of compulsive eating, and administered saffron extract to 50% of the group, whilst the other 50% was given a placebo. The study dictated that the pills were taken twice a day, for a period of 8-weeks, and their diets were uninhibited- they could eat freely, as they always had. Very quickly, it became obvious that the appetite-suppressing qualities of the saffron were working in the test group, as the weight-loss in those participants was significant! And by the 8th week, with the conclusion of the study, it was recorded that the individuals who had been taking the saffron extract were now snacking about half as much as they had been at the start. That is quite some impact for a natural supplement to have!

How Does it Work?

It is thought that saffron targets the chemical transmitters in the brain that send the message to your body that you are hungry; you simply feel less hungry as a result. However, there is an even more significant effect that saffron extract has, which targets the downfall of many women?s dieting. Namely, women tend to be emotional eaters. This kind of eating has nothing to do with appetite, and everything to do with mood. Studies are showing that not only does saffron suppress your appetite when you are hungry, it also improves your mood, so that you don?t feel the need to eat when you are not hungry! This in itself may be as valuable to your diet success as appetite suppression! Based on a study that was conducted in 2004, saffron extract was administered to 30 adults for six weeks, all of whom suffered from mild depression. By the end of the study, the saffron extract was found to be as effective as a conventional anti-depressant!

This study published in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal shows the effectiveness of saffron extract in combating depression:

What People on the Web Say:

Very Pleased With the Results!

I saw this product recommended by Dr. Oz and to my surprise it really did control my cravings. When I ran out I noticed I longed for items that I had easily been able to do without, cakes cookies, etc. So I just ordered my second bottle and so far I?m very pleased with the results, it makes midnight snacking a distant memory.

Great Results!

Just like millions of other Dr. Oz viewers I DVR?d the show and watched it. I now in my second bottle and I can feel the difference, I do not crave sweets as I use to. It has been over 40 days without my favorite evening treat ice cream. It does work but it took me about 10 days to fight off the urge for that third helping.
