Babies are conscious? Science confirms what moms know.

Babies are aware of what's going on, not just reflexively reacting to it, scientists concluded after a series of experiments on babies as young as 5 months.

A contestant in the 2000 American Baby Derby heads towards the finish line. Crawling babies raced to see who was fastest. According to the promoters, The Boston Baby Faire, a two-day event with more than 200 exhibitors of every type of baby product, is the largest baby exposition in the United States.

New parents may raise an eyebrow at the idea that their baby might not be a conscious being, but scientists have, until now, not been able to clearly show that infants react with awareness rather than reflexively. Even in adults, much of the brain's processing of the world occurs without conscious awareness, said Sid Kouider, a neuroscientist at the Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique in Paris and the Technical University of Denmark. ?

One odd phenomenon, "blindsight," occurs in people with damage to part of their visual cortex. Although they cannot consciously see, they're able to "guess" the location of a visual stimulus or even catch objects tossed at them. Blindsight reveals that even unconscious processing in the brain can result in seemingly goal-directed behavior.

So when babies look toward a face or grasp an object, they, too, might be doing so without a conscious experience of what they're seeing.

"Infants might be responding in a kind of automatic manner," Kouider told LiveScience. Unfortunately, since babies don't talk, scientists can't test consciousness by asking infants what they experience.

Baby brain patterns

So Kouider and his colleagues turned to brain activity for a peak into babies' awareness. When adults are shown a subliminal image, their brains show a spike in electrical activity in sensory regions ? even though they may not consciously register that they've seen such a brief image.

When the image does consciously register, however, the brain shows a second leap in activity, typically about 300 milliseconds after the presentation of the image. This pattern reveals visual consciousness, Kouider said, which means that not only does the brain respond to the image, but also the owner of that brain perceives that response and has a conscious experience of the image.

The researchers wanted to know whether babies would show this same brain pattern. They recruited 30 5-month-olds, 29 12-month-olds and 21 15-month-olds and fitted the babies with electrode caps that measure the brain's electrical activity through the scalp.

Next, the babies sat on their mother or father's lap while watching a screen with a patterned image. For a fraction of a second (ranging from as quick as 17 milliseconds up to 300 milliseconds), the researchers flashed a photo of a face on the screen.

Experiencing awareness

The scientists then analyzed the babies' brain activity to search for the two-phase pattern that would indicate consciousness. They found it: Babies did indeed show a secondary spike in neural activity, just like adults.

But there was one important difference between the babies' neural patterns and those seen in adults, Kouider said. In 5-month-olds, it took 1.3 seconds for the second flurry of brain activity to show up. In adults, the timing is closer to three-tenths of a second, or 0.3 seconds.

"It's about four times slower, actually, in the younger infants," Kouider said.?

Older babies show snappier processing, though still not as quick as adults, the researchers found. In 12- to 15-month-olds, the second phase is stronger than in 5-month-olds and occurs around eight-tenths to nine-tenths of a second.

A 1-year randomized clinical trial

New research published as an abstract in The FASEB Journal and presented at Experimental Biology 2013 (EB 2013) on Monday, April 22 ties mushrooms to positive health outcomes in the area of weight management. A one-year, randomized clinical trial conducted by researchers at the Weight Management Center at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and funded by the Mushroom Council found that substituting white button mushrooms for red meat can be a useful strategy for enhancing and maintaining weight loss.1

Participants included obese adults (73 adults; 88% women; mean age 48.4 years) who were placed in an intervention group eating approximately one cup of mushrooms per day in place of meat, and a standard diet control group.

At the end of the one-year trial, researchers found that participants who substituted mushrooms for meat lost seven pounds, showed improvements in body composition compared to participants on the standard diet, and maintained the weight loss. Specifically, those in the intervention group reported lower calorie and fat intake (123 calories, 4.25 grams respectively, per day); lost more pounds and percentage body weight (7 pounds, 3.6 percent of their starting weight); achieved lower body mass index (1.5kg/m2), waist circumference (2.6 inches) and percent total body fat (0.85 percent) compared to participants on the control diet.

The new findings build on previous research, which showed that increasing intake of low-energy-density foods, specifically mushrooms, in place of high-energy-density foods, like lean ground beef, can be an effective method for reducing daily energy and fat intake while still feeling full and satiated after the meal.2

Lawrence Cheskin, M.D., F.A.C.P., Associate Professor, Department of Health, Behavior and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, authored the research study and can discuss the role of mushroom substitution in the area of weight management.

Research will be presented at the Body Composition Poster Session at the meeting of the American Society for Nutrition at Experimental Biology 2013 on Monday, April 22, 1:45 pm-2:45 pm EST; Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Boston, MA.

Tsarnaev remains in serious condition at hospital, FBI says

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (AP/File)

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remains in serious condition at the heavily-guarded Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the FBI said early Sunday.

The update on Tsarnaev's condition comes as federal authorities are waiting to question the 19-year-old, who is accused of helping carry out the attack that killed three people and wounded 180 others, many of them critically, near the finish line of Monday's race.

According to a federal official, Tsarnaev is sedated and unable to speak.

He was brought by ambulance to the facility after he was captured in Watertown, Mass., on Friday, following an intense manhunt that included at least two shootouts with police and ended with the bloodied suspect taken into custody from a tarp-covered boat he had been hiding in. He apparently suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and leg.

Tsarnaev's 26-year-old brother, Tamerlan, the other suspect wanted by the FBI, was killed during a late-night firefight with police in Watertown. Tsarnaev managed to escape on foot, prompting a citywide lockdown as police conducted a house-by-house search for the alleged killer.

[Related: Arrest presents intelligence opportunity]

The Tsarnaev brothers, who were born in the former Russian territory known as Kyrgyzstan and are of Chechen descent, lived in Cambridge, Mass., for several years. Dzhokhar became a naturalized American citizen last year.

Under U.S. law, authorities have 72 hours after Tsarnaev's arrest to file a criminal complaint against him. When they do, Tsarnaev is expected to face terror charges that could bring the death penalty.

"I hope that the U.S. attorney, Carmen Ortiz, takes him on the federal side and throws the book at him," Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said on ABC's "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday.

"We don't know if we'll ever be able to question the individual," Menino added.

Richard Roper, a former U.S. District Attorney in the Northern District of Texas, told Yahoo News Dzhokhar could be charged in his hospital room.

?Then when he?s better, he can make an appearance in court,? Roper said.

[Slideshow: 'We Got Him': Newspaper covers capture dramatic arrest]

Hours after the FBI made a public plea to help identify the suspects from video and photos at the marathon, the brothers allegedly shot and killed an MIT police officer and wounded a transit cop. Authorities said the pair launched explosives during a dramatic high-speed chase in residential Watertown early Friday.

No motive has been revealed for Monday?s attack.

Immediately after Dzhokhar?s capture, federal prosecutors stirred controversy in legal circles by refusing to grant Dzhokhar his Miranda rights against self-incrimination, citing public safety concerns.

"He is not going to be read the Miranda warnings," ABC News Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas said Sunday. "They are going to use the Public Safety Exception, and dive in without advising him of his right to remain silent. They are taking this extraordinary step because there could be an imminent threat still out there. ... There's deep, deep concern about the amount of ammunition, guns and working bombs these men had."

Boston Police commissioner Ed Davis told "Fox News Sunday" that the amount of explosives police found suggested that the brothers may have been planning another attack.

"We are hoping, for a host of reasons, that the suspect survives," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said Saturday. "Because we have a million questions, and those questions need to be answered."

(AP) ? Eight-time defending champion Rafael Nadal recorded his 46th consecutive win at the Monte Carlo Masters by beating Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (3) Saturday to set up a repeat of last year's final against top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard has reached five straight finals since returning from a seven-month layoff following a left knee injury. He will go for his fourth title of the season against Djokovic, who cruised past unseeded Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

The Serb showed no signs his right ankle is still bothering him, two weeks after twisting it during a Davis Cup match against the United States.

Djokovic and Nadal have not played against each other since last year's French Open final, which Nadal won. He has won their last three encounters, after Djokovic took the previous seven ? all of which were tournament finals. Nadal leads their career series 19-14.

The sixth-seeded Tsonga saved four match points, rallying from 5-1 down to force a second-set tiebreaker. He tied it 3-3 before making unforced errors by hurrying his shots.

Nadal clinched the victory with a forehand winner and took a step closer to a ninth straight Monte Carlo title and to extending his Masters titles record to 23.

Tsonga started well but missed three breakpoint chances in the fourth game ? including one which left him shaking his head in disbelief after Nadal scooped the ball off his ankles and whipped it back down the line.

"He was extremely good today, and this is also what I call the champion's luck," Tsonga said. "The top players are able to do that."

The flustered Frenchman lost his next service game and totaled 17 unforced errors in the first set compared to four for Nadal.

It looked like Nadal would wrap up the second set more quickly than the first, breaking for a 2-0 lead and holding three match points at 5-2. Tsonga saved those with some excellent shot-making, and turned the set around.

"I always try to be aggressive when I play him. It's the only way for me. If I stay back, there's no way I can win," Tsonga said. "But I can't rush to the net either because otherwise he hits a passing shot, and 90 percent of the time I lose the point.

"So I have to have the right mix between patience and aggressiveness."

With Nadal serving for the match in the ninth game, Tsonga held two breakpoints that were erased by a pair of aces. The Spaniard made two unforced errors to drop serve and the Frenchman tied it at 5-5 as chants of "Tsonga, Tsonga" rang out in the crowd.

Tsonga saved a fourth match point in the 12th game when an off-balance Nadal sent a forehand well wide.

But Tsonga ultimately made too many unforced errors ? 39 to Nadal's 12 ? costing him a chance of taking Nadal into a third set. Grigor Dimitrov won a set off Nadal before losing in Friday's quarterfinals.

Nadal has not lost at Monte Carlo since falling to former French Open champion Guillermo Coria in 2003. Nadal missed the following year because of an injury.

Fognini made 26 unforced errors and was jeered off the court at the end of his first Masters semifinal. The Italian called for a trainer at 4-1.

At the next changeover he called the trainer again, pointing to his left shin as the trainer sprayed and taped it.

The Italian lost his serve again in the next game as Djokovic wrapped up the set without facing a break point and converted two of his four chances on Fognini's serve.

Fognini quickly left the court as boos rang down from the stands.

Intense, specialized training in young athletes linked to serious overuse injuries

Apr. 19, 2013 ? ?Young athletes who specialize in one sport and train intensively have a significantly higher risk of stress fractures and other severe overuse injuries, even when compared with other injured athletes, according to the largest clinical study of its kind.

For example, young athletes who spent more hours per week than their age playing one sport ? such as a 12-year-old who plays tennis 13 or more hours a week ? were 70 percent more likely to experience serious overuse injuries than other injuries.

Loyola University Medical Center sports medicine physician Dr. Neeru Jayanthi presented findings during an oral podium research session April 19 at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) meeting in San Diego. The study is titled ?Risks of Specialized Training and Growth in Young Athletes: A Prospective Clinical Cohort Study.?

"We should be cautious about intense specialization in one sport before and during adolescence,? Jayanthi said. ?Among the recommendations we can make, based on our findings, is that young athletes should not spend more hours per week in organized sports than their ages.?

Between 2010 and 20103, Jayanthi and colleagues at Loyola and Lurie Children?s Hospital of Chicago enrolled 1,206 athletes ages 8 to 18 between who had come in for sports physicals or treatment for injuries. Researchers are following each athlete for up to three years.

There were 859 total injuries, including 564 overuse injuries, in cases in which the clinical diagnosis was recorded. The overuse injuries included 139 serious injuries such as stress fractures in the back or limbs, elbow ligament injuries and osteochondral injuries (injuries to cartilage and underlying bone). Such serious injuries can force young athletes to the sidelines for one to six months or longer.

The study confirmed preliminary findings, reported earlier, that specializing in a single sport increases the risk of overall injury, even when controlling for an athlete?s age and hours per week of sports activity.

Among the study?s other findings:

? Young athletes were more likely to be injured if they spent more than twice as much time playing organized sports as they spent in unorganized free play -- for example, playing 11 hours of organized soccer each week, and only 5 hours of free play such as pick-up games.

? Athletes who suffered serious injuries spent an average of 21 hours per week in total physical activity (organized sports, gym and unorganized free play), including 13 hours in organized sports. By comparison, athletes who were not injured, participated in less activity ? 17.6 hours per week in total physical activity, including only 9.4 hours in organized sports.

? Injured athletes scored 3.3 on researchers? six-point sports-specialization scale. Uninjured athletes scored 2.7 on the specialization scale. (On the sports specialization scale, an athlete is given one point for each of the following: Trains more than 75 percent of the time in one sport; trains to improve skill or misses time with friends; has quit other sports to focus on one sport; considers one sport more important than other sports; regularly travels out of state; trains more than eight months a year or competes more than six months per year.

Jayanthi offers the following tips to reduce the risk of injuries in young adults:

? Do not spend more hours per week than your age playing sports. (Younger children are developmentally immature and may be less able to tolerate physical stress.)

? Do not spend more than twice as much time playing organized sports as you spend in gym and unorganized play.

? Do not specialize in one sport before late adolescence.

? Do not play sports competitively year round. Take a break from competition for one-to-three months each year (not necessarily consecutively).

? Take at least one day off per week from training in sports.

Jayanthi and colleagues at Loyola and Lurie Children?s Hospital are planning a follow-up study to determine whether counseling recommendations on proper sports training can reduce the risk of overuse injuries in young athletes. The study is called TRACK ? Training, Risk Assessment and Counseling in Kids.

?We will be testing our hypothesis that many of these serious injuries are potentially preventable,? Jayanthi said.

The current study was funded by two research grants from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Jayanthi is a member of an AMSSM committee that is writing guidelines on preventing and treating overuse injuries in young athletes.

Jayanthi is Medical Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at Loyola. He is an associate professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

Co-authors of the study Lara Dugas, PhD, of Loyola?s Department of Public Health Sciences and Cynthia LaBella, MD, and Brittany Patrick of Lurie Children?s hospital. Loyola medical students and research assistants who assisted in the study are Dan Fisher, Courtney Pinkham, Erin Feller and Peter Linn.

The study was originally supported by Stritch School of Medicine's Student Training in Approaches to Research (STAR) program.

Does High Public Debt Consistently Stifle Economic Growth? The R&R Paper Critique

http://www.peri.umass.edu/fileadmin/...-350/WP322.pdf

This paper has been going around the economic blocks the last few days. The study that was used to determine that having >90% GDP debt caused grave issues in economic growth, one of the fundamental cases for austerity, turned out to be false.

The link above is a PDF critique of the paper. Highlighted amongst the errors of the Reinhart/Rogoff paper was a spreadsheet coding error and unconventional weighing of summary statistics. The two professors that created the paper have as far as I know, at least admitted to the spreadsheet coding error today.

The growth for countries with a >90% GDP ratio according to the R&R paper would slow from 2.8 to -0.1%, whereas the critique counters by saying the growth only slows from 3.2 to 2.2% and what one can conclude from the paper is that debt is a problem, but hardly as much a problem as unemployment. Anyone that had used these foundations to predict some gigantic crash in the very near future turned out to be mistaken.

In short, I guess it doesn't mean that we should ignore the budget entirely, but the DEFCON 1 flag that conservative media has put up on us the last couple of years was a false flag.

A lot of people have got to be feeling quite duped today. Myself included.

It also brings up the theory that nobody really understand the economy. The austerity approach sounds seductive, but it has some significant side effects, like unemployment, rioting in the streets and civil war. Excessive unemployment tends to negate some of the positive aspects of austerity.

You do realize that we have to pay interest on the debt...

Seriously, cutting spending and trying to bring down the debt would ultimately free up money for things like education, because we no longer have to use said money on paying interest on the country's credit card.

The first misunderstanding I made from the report is they're saying that debt has NO negative effect. It's not. They're saying it's a negative effect, just not even close to as bad as originally researched.

So balancing the budget is still an issue. It's the belief to hide in commodities like gold and silver and other precious metals as conservative media had thrown around for years is what got broken down.

Austerity from an economic perspective makes far more sense during strong economic times not during recessions or recovery.

To put it personal finance terms. If you loose your job it's not uncommon to run on some debt in order eat and such. But when you get a job you pay that debt down. The current Republican mindset is reversed. They want to pay down debt when the loose their job at the expense of eating and such and the run up their debt when they have a job.

The problem with the debt we have now is not the current deficits. The problem is that they are being added to debt that should have been paid down during good times.

That assumes no side effects of cutting spending. Serious cuts get into putting people out of jobs. Most big government jobs are done by civilians, not people directly on the government payroll. To focus only on one aspect misses the context. That's why a realistic budget deals with revenue as well as spending.

I think this song could sum up the situation...

Politicians have a habit of deliberately cutting whatever is necessary like policemen and firemen in order to make cuts look as horrible as possible, instead of cutting the stupid stuff.

I felt the song was appropriate.
