Duties & Responsibilities

The Central Finance & Administration group represents a newly created organization to drive efficiency and consistency in policy and practice across Central Administration. The organization broadly oversees the budgeting, reporting and strategic financial management needs of Central Administration, supporting the Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration and the Executive Vice President.

The group also directly provides shared service financial and transaction management for two Central groups, Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) and Harvard Planning and Project Management (HPPM).

The Service Unit Financial Analyst will report to Central Finance & Administration's Director of Finance and will work closely with the Service Units (e.g., real estate services, IT services, health services) to help executives at the highest levels of the University answer strategic questions related to these groups; analyze their multi-year plans and budgets; and evaluate performance. This position will also work closely with the University's Office of Financial Strategy and Planning (OFSP) which oversees multi-year financial planning, annual and interim budgeting, forecasting, and various other projects, which are ultimately shared with Harvard's Corporation (Board of Directors).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Work closely with Service Unit finance team and leadership to analyze and evaluate multi-year financial plans, operating budgets, and capital plans, identifying key themes and implications for University leadership and supporting Office of Financial Strategy and Planning (OFSP)-related initiatives

Conduct objective analysis of the Service Units' financial performance on a periodic basis, developing an in-depth understanding of these Units' financial structure in order to frame key questions for Unit and University leadership; serve as a resource to the Units for on-going reporting and planning questions

Consult with the Units on critical strategic questions that require thoughtful problem solving and analytic capabilities

Develop and deliver presentations that educate University and Service Unit leadership on potential options, facilitating informal and formal dialogue as needed

Serve as Central Administration's representative to Service Unit rate setting (i.e., internal pricing) committees and related discussions, and surfacing broader University implications

Partner with the Controller's Office to roll out Service Unit quarterly reporting and act as a central contact for variance questions

Partner with the Service Units to ensure consistent Central Administration policies and practices

Basic Qualifications

MBA (or other relevant professional/graduate degree) and 3+ years of financial management experience, including demonstrated experience with complex financial analysis OR Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of financial management or consulting experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail in written communications. Comfort with ambiguity and ability to work in relationship-based organizations highly valued. Extensive experience with software such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

Additional Qualifications

Excellent presentation skills and experience presenting to senior ("C-level") leadership. Must be self-starter, well organized, flexible, and able to manage multiple challenging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work setting. Applicant should also have collaborative working style with strong project management and problem solving skills. Experience with Oracle financial, budget and database tools a plus.
