Israeli Tourists Killed in Bus Blast in Bulgaria :: Balkan Insight

A bus carrying about 40 Israeli tourists exploded on Wednesday afternoon near the arrival terminal at Burgas airport by the Black Sea, some 400 kilometres east of Bulgarian capital Sofia.

The number of killed in blast is still not officially confirmed, while three injured persons are in critical condition.

Financial Times reports that Bulgarian police and interior ministry called the explosion a terrorist attack.

Although Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said that the explosion was caused by a bomb placed in the baggage compartment of the bus, some witnesses claim that they saw a person entering a bus just before the explosion. Jerusalem Post reports that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber.

Bulgarian police blocked the area around the airport, while the Israeli embassy in Bulgaria is also investigating the explosion.?

The Israeli tourists that came to Bulgaria from Tel Aviv were on a bus to Black sea resort Sunny Beach.

Rosen Plevneliev, Bulgarian president, and Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov had gone to Burgas.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said he talked to Mladenov about the explosion and called for an urgent meeting of all relevant state institutions.
