But there are now signs that television news ? which so far has held onto its audience through the rise of the internet ? also is increasingly vulnerable, as it may be losing its hold on the next generation of news consumers.</p><p>Online and digital news consumption, meanwhile, continues to increase, with many more people now getting news on cell phones, tablets or other mobile platforms. And perhaps the most dramatic change in the news environment has been the rise of social networking sites. The percentage of Americans saying they saw news or news headlines on a social networking site yesterday has doubled ? from 9% to 19% ? since 2010. Among adults younger than age 30, as many saw news on a social networking site the previous day (33%) as saw any television news (34%), with just 13% having read a newspaper either in print or digital form.</p><p>These are among the principal findings of the Pew Research Center?s biennial news consumption survey, which has tracked patterns in news use for nearly two decades. The latest survey was conducted May 9-June 3, 2012, among 3,003 adults.</p><p>The proportion of Americans who read news on a printed page ? in newspapers and magazines ? continues to decline, even as online readership has offset some of these losses. Just 23% say they read a print newspaper yesterday, down only slightly since 2010 (26%), but off by about half since 2000 (47%).</p><p>The decline of print on paper spans beyond just newspapers. The proportion reading a magazine in print yesterday has declined over the same period (26% in 2000, 18% today). And as email, text messaging and social networking become dominant forms of communication, the percentage saying they wrote or received a personal letter the previous day also has fallen, from 20% in 2006 to 12% currently. There has been no decrease in recent years in the percentage reading a book on a typical day, but a growing share is now reading through an electronic or audio device.</p><p>While print sources have suffered readership losses in recent years, television news viewership has remained more stable. Currently, 55% say they watched the news or a news program on television yesterday, little changed from recent years. But there are signs this may also change. Only about a third (34%) of those younger than 30 say they watched TV news yesterday; in 2006, nearly half of young people (49%) said they watched TV news the prior day. Among older age groups, the percentages saying they watched TV yesterday has not changed significantly over this period.</p><p>The changing demographics of the TV news audience are particularly noticeable in the audiences for local and cable news. The overall share of Americans saying they regularly watch local television news has slipped from 54% in 2006 to 48% today ? and in that regard it remains one of the news sources with the broadest reach. But the number of 18-to-29 year-olds regularly watching local news has fallen from 42% in 2006 to 28% today.</p><p>Over this same period, the regular audience for cable news also has aged. In 2006 and 2008, there were only modest age differences in regular cable news viewership. But in the current survey, more than twice as many of those 65 and older as those younger than 30 say they regularly watch cable news (51% vs. 23%).<br />CNN?s Losses Continue</p><p>Among individual cable news outlets, CNN?s regular audience has declined since 2008. Four years ago, nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) said they regularly watched CNN; that has fallen to 16% in the new survey.</p><p>Regular viewership for both Fox News and MSNBC has not changed much in recent years.<br />About one-in-five Americans (21%) say they regularly watch Fox News, while about half as many (11%) say they regularly watch MSNBC.<br />Print on Paper: Going, Going ?</p><p>While Americans enjoy reading as much as ever ? 51% say they enjoy reading a lot, little changed over the past two decades ? a declining proportion gets news or reads other material on paper on a typical day. And there is new evidence in the survey of a shift in reading to electronic platforms.</p><p>In the new survey, only 29% say they read a newspaper yesterday, with just 23% reading a print newspaper. Over the past decade, the percentage reading a print newspaper has fallen by 18 points (from 41% to 23%). Somewhat more (38%) say they regularly read a daily newspaper, although this percentage also has declined, from 54% in 2004. Figures for newspaper readership may not include some people who read newspaper content on sites that aggregate news content, such as Google News or Yahoo News.</p><p>Over the past decade, there have been smaller declines in the percentages of Americans reading a magazine or book in print (six points and four points, respectively) than for newspapers.</p><p>Just as online newspaper readers make up an ever-greater share of all newspaper readers, so too are more magazine readers and book readers abandoning the printed page for tablets, digital books and other devices. In the current survey, 9% of those who said they read a magazine yesterday, and 20% who read a book, read them in a non-print format.</p><p>And substantial percentages of the regular readers of leading newspapers now read them digitally. Currently, 55% of regular New York Times readers say they read the paper mostly on a computer or mobile device, as do 48% of regular USA Today and 44% of Wall Street Journal readers.</p><p>By contrast, most readers of such magazines as Harpers, the Atlantic and the New Yorker still read them in print. But even for these magazines, nearly a quarter of regular readers (23%) say they read them mostly on a computer or digital device.<br />Online News: More Mobile, More Social</p><p>While traditional news platforms have lost audience, online news consumption has been undergoing major changes as well. Nearly one-in-five Americans (17%) say they got news yesterday on a mobile device yesterday, with the vast majority of these people (78%) getting news on their cell phone. Among smartphone owners, nearly a third (31%) got news yesterday on a mobile device.</p><p>The second major trend in online news consumption is the rise of news on social networks. Today, 19% of the public says they saw news or news headlines on social networking sites yesterday, up from 9% two years ago. And the percentage regularly getting news or news headlines on these sites has nearly tripled, from 7% to 20%.</p><p>In part, this is a byproduct of the explosive growth in social networking. In the current survey, 41% of all adults, including 47% of online adults, say they used Facebook or another social networking site yesterday. (For more on social networking, see surveys conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.)</p><p>On top of the increase in social network use, the poll finds that news is also more prevalent on social networking sites. The share of users who saw news there yesterday nearly doubled from 19% to 36% between 2010 and 2012.</p><p>The increasing use of these sites for news has not just occurred among young people. In fact, those in their 30s are nearly as likely as those 18 to 24 to say they saw news or news headlines on Facebook or another social networking site yesterday (30% vs. 34%). And about a quarter of adults in their 40s (23%) saw news yesterday on social networks, up from just 8% in 2010.</p><p>The two trends in online news consumption ? growing numbers getting news via mobile devices and the increasing use of social networks ? are complementary. Overall, 55% of Americans access the internet on a mobile device, such as a cell phone or tablet; among this group, 30% say they saw news on social networking sites yesterday. That compares with just 9% of Americans who are online but do not access the internet on a mobile device.<br />Getting News on Twitter</p><p>While news gathering is very common among Twitter users, the overall reach is limited because the audience remains relatively small. About one-in-ten Americans (13%) ever use Twitter or read Twitter messages. By comparison, more than half (54%) ever use other social networking sites, such as Facebook, Google Plus or LinkedIn.</p><p>As a result, far fewer people get news on Twitter than on other social networking sites. Just 11% ever see news on Twitter, while 3% got news there yesterday. Nearly half of adults (47%) ever get news on Facebook and other social networking sites and 19% got news on one or more of those sites yesterday.</p><p>Nonetheless, Twitter users are increasingly getting news on the site and sharing news stories with others. Overall, 83% of Twitter users ever see news on Twitter and 26% saw news there yesterday; both percentages are up considerably from two years ago. And most Twitter users (59%) tweet or retweet news headlines on Twitter. Photo by Tom Sorensen</p> <p><em>by Steve Breazeale </em></p> <p>At 6 feet tall, 168 pounds, 17-year-old Scott Savage can hold down the blue line with the best of them.<br />In fact, the San Clemente native has been so good as a defenseman for the USA National U17 Team that he was chosen to participate in the inaugural CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game at the First Niagra Center in Buffalo, N.Y. on September 29.<br />The event will feature 40 prospects from all over the country that will be eligible for next year?s NHL Draft.<br />Savage, who attended San Clemente High as a freshman and a sophomore, has been honing his hockey skills in Ann Arbor, Mich. for the past two years. He has been living with a host family and attending Pioneer High School while training with and competing for the USA Hockey Developmental Team.<br />So far he?s traveled with the team to Slovakia, Russian and Canada to play against top-level talent. While in Russia last season, Savage and the USA team won the Four Nations Tournament.<br />?The best experience I?ve had in my hockey career was standing on the blue line in Russia singing our national anthem,? The finding may lead to new strategies that protect women's fertility by blocking the activity of these two proteins.</p> <p>Associate Professor Clare Scott from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute said the research showed that when the DNA of egg cells is damaged following exposure to radiation or chemotherapy, such as that received during some cancer treatments, PUMA and NOXA trigger the death of the damaged eggs. This egg cell death causes many female cancer patients to become infertile.</p> <p>"PUMA and NOXA can trigger cell death, and have been found to be necessary for the death of many different cell types in response to DNA damage," Associate Professor Scott, who is also an oncologist at The Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's Hospitals, said. "This removal of damaged cells is a natural process that is essential to maintaining health but, for women undergoing cancer treatment, can be devastating when it leads to infertility."</p> Associate Professor Scott, Dr Ewa Michalak and Professor Andreas Strasser from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, together with Associate Professor Jeffrey Kerr from Monash University, and Dr Karla Hutt and Professor Jock Findlay from Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research, focused their studies on egg cells called primordial follicle oocytes, which provide each woman's lifetime supply of eggs. Low numbers of these egg cells can also be a cause of early menopause. Their findings are <span id="vocabhighlighter802" class="vh-Default-pen" title="publish">publish</span>ed online this week in the <span id="vocabhighlighter803" class="vh-Default-pen" title="journal">journal</span> <em>Molecular Cell</em>. <p>Associate Professor Jeff Kerr said that when these egg-producing cells were missing the PUMA protein, they did not die after being exposed to radiation therapy. "This might ordinarily be cause for concern because you want damaged egg cells to die so as not to produce abnormal offspring," he said. "To our great surprise we found that not only did the cells survive being irradiated, they were able to repair the DNA damage they had sustained and could be ovulated and fertilized, producing healthy offspring. When the cells were also missing the NOXA protein, there was even better protection against radiation."</p> <p>"We were very excited to see healthy offspring could be produced from these cells," Associate Professor Scott said. "It means that in the future, medications that block the function of PUMA could be used to stop the death of egg cells in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Our results suggest that this could maintain the fertility of these patients."</p> <p>A joint leader of the study, Professor Jock Findlay, head of the Female Reproductive Biology Group at Prince Henry's Institute, said the study could also have implications for delaying menopause. "We know that the timing of menopause is influenced by how many egg cells a female has," he said. "Interventions that slow the loss of egg cells from the ovaries could delay premature menopause. He says they're doing the best they can.</p><p>They're not responsible for the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_8">New England Patriots</span> 1-2 start, the quarterback said Tuesday, putting the blame on himself and his team.</p><p>The morning after the Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers 14-12 on a touchdown that the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_1">NFL</span> conceded shouldn't have been allowed, Brady said on WEEI radio, "I got a few text messages about" that play but didn't see it when it happened.</p><p>On Sunday night, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_9">the Patriots</span> lost to the Baltimore Ravens 31-30 on a last-play field goal that came close to the right upright. Coach <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_7">Bill Belichick</span> grabbed the arm of an official who was heading off the field, but the official kept moving. Belichick explained Monday that he had wanted to ask if the play was reviewable.</p><p>"I feel like these guys are doing the best they can do," Brady said. "They're going to miss calls and so forth, and really, part of my job is not to worry about the officials, so I hate spending time talking about them, and I never have talked about the officials. The reason why we lost our particular game was certainly not because of the officials and that goes for all three of our games."</p><p>It would be "the easy way out" to blame officials for the losses, he said.</p><p>The critics of the officials replacing those the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_2">NFL</span> locked out in a labor dispute ? players, coaches, fans ? have grown louder, especially after Monday night's game</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_3">NFL</span> executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson said Monday he is reviewing the conduct of Belichick and the Ravens' John Harbaugh in Sunday night's game.</p><p>In his regular Tuesday conference call with reporters, Belichick declined to say whether he had given the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_4">NFL</span> his side of what happened after the field goal.</p><p>"I think I'll just keep all of that process private," he said. "Whatever the league has to say, any announcements or whatever they have to say, then they can make those or not make them whenever, if and when they decide to do it. I'll just leave all that to them."</p><p>The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_5">NFL</span> waited a week before announcing on Monday that it had fined Denver Broncos coach John Fox $30,000 and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for arguing with replacement officials the previous Monday.</p><p>Belichick also said he had no reaction to the end of the Packers-Seahawks game and has been busy preparing for Sunday's road game against the Buffalo Bills.</p><p>"I really haven't had time to focus too much on any other games or any other teams or any of that," he said. "Seeing if I can do a better job of coaching <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_10">the Patriots</span> would be a good place for me to start."</p><p>On the final play from scrimmage in Seattle, Packers safety M.D. Jennings and Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate both got their hands on a pass into the end zone from Russell Wilson. The Packers insisted Jennings had clear possession for a game-ending interception. But officials ruled on the field that the two had possession at the same time, which counts as a reception.</p><p>The <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_6">NFL</span> said Tuesday that the referee was correct that no indisputable visual evidence existed on review to overturn the touchdown call, although that is not the same as confirming the on-field call was correct.</p><p>In Sunday's game at Baltimore, there were 24 accepted penalties ? 14 against the Ravens and 10 against <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348610635_11">the Patriots</span>. The last one, an obvious defensive pass interference call against New England cornerback Devin McCourty, set up Justin Tucker's decisive 27-yard field goal. In the Patriots opening 34-13 win over the Tennessee Titans, no flag was thrown on a blatant pass interference by McCourty against a receiver in the end zone.</p><p>Brady said he hasn't talked about officials with the other 10 offensive players when they're on the field.</p><p>"When you're in the course of a game, it feels very much like a normal game," he said. "You get a (penalty) call, then you see the next day (and think) 'Wow, should we have been called for that?' But it really feels like for us it's balanced out over the course of a game."</p><p>Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia downplayed anything he might do to prepare his players for replacement officials.</p><p>"We do a great job here of everybody understanding that you control what you can control," he said. "If we put all our effort and focus into what we can control, then we'll be all right."</p><p>But the Patriots have a losing record for the first time in nine seasons. And they couldn't hang on to a 30-21 lead midway through the fourth quarter because the offense couldn't run out the clock and the defense couldn't stop the Ravens.</p><p>"For me, it's been business as usual and I know, for our offense, that's the way it's been," Brady said. "We've got some calls. We haven't got some calls. We're sitting at 1-2, so I don't think there's really anyone to blame but ourselves."</p><p>And what about that winning field goal by the Ravens? Did the officials get it right?</p><p>"From the angle that I have, I can't tell," Brady said. Philadelphia's Andy Reid felt ignored while trying to decline a penalty.</p><p>The furor over the work of replacement officials reached something of a fevered pitch during Week 3 in the NFL, when even deciphering downs and distance became a challenge.</p><p>In Sunday night's Ravens-Patriots game, shoving matches followed even insignificant plays. One TV analyst called it the substitute-teacher syndrome: See how much you can get away with before the real thing returns.</p><p>"Nature says for us that we're going to go out there and push the limit regardless," Vikings linebacker <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_0">Chad</span> Greenway said. "If they're calling a game tight, if they're calling a game loose, it's going to be pushed to the limit. You are pushing it to the brink. If things are going to be called easier, and in some situations I feel like they've been less lenient, too, you've just got to play and see how (it's being called)."</p><p>If you can figure it out.</p><p><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_8">Broncos coach John Fox</span> was fined $30,000 Monday and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for verbal abuse of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_4">officials</span> during a Monday night game against Atlanta on Sept. 17.</p><p>More fines are likely for <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_7">Belichick</span> and Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, and perhaps for others.</p><p>Fox and Del Rio were hit for their sideline histrionics, particularly when Fox was told he couldn't challenge a call of 12 men on the field ? he was correct that he could challenge, although replays showed the Broncos were guilty.</p><p>Before grabbing the arm of an official, Belichick wanted to know why Justin Tucker's <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_5">field goal</span> was called good in Baltimore's 31-30 victory Sunday night. He couldn't tell from his angle on the sideline, he said.</p><p>"So when the game was over, I went out and I was really looking for an explanation from the officials as to whether the play was under review," he said, "and I did try to get the official's attention as he was coming off the field to ask that, but I really wasn't able to do that."</p><p>Most confusing was the mark-off for a Lions penalty in overtime at Tennessee. Officials wound up penalizing Detroit from its 44-yard line rather than from the original line of scrimmage, the Titans 44.</p><p>Soon after, Rob Bironas kicked a go-ahead field goal.</p><p>Schwartz noted that the alternate official who helps the replacements with administrating penalties was on the Detroit sideline.</p><p>"We said, 'You're enforcing it from the wrong spot.' He was adamant that they weren't doing so," Schwartz said. "At that point, we just needed to play."</p><p>They didn't play well enough to avoid losing 44-41, and Titans coach <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348530044_6">Mike Munchak</span> wasn't apologizing for how his team won.</p><p>"I don't feel any guilt," Munchak said. "For us, really the obvious answer is there's nothing we can do about who's officiating games. It's the same for everybody, so go out and don't get caught up in all that."</p><p>The league and the officials' union met Sunday without reaching any agreement on ending the lockout that began in June. The players' union also called on the 32 team owners to end the lockout because it is compromising the integrity of the game.</p><p>While most of the coaches are being careful what they say about the replacements, the players and broadcasters are less inhibited.</p><p>"Unfortunately, I feel like that it's like changing an intersection from a stop sign to a red light," Browns kicker Phil Dawson said. "You have to have so many car wrecks before they deem that intersection to be dangerous enough ? and we're heading that way. Someone's going to lose a game, if it hasn't already happened, to get both sides to a pressure point to get a deal done. It's sad."</p><p>Certainly not holding back on the criticism are some of the NFL's broadcast partners. Analyst Cris Collinsworth was forthright in his evaluation of the officiating problems Sunday night, as were Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden during last Monday night's flag-fest in Atlanta.</p><p>"We don't want to talk about the officials, trust us," ESPN's Tirico said. "But it's affecting the game. When we meet with teams and coordinators, frustration boils out into limited on-the-record statements. Off the record, what guys are saying ? it's a nightmare. It is impacting the game.</p><p>"It hasn't burned a team to cost them a playoff spot yet. But you should go back and watch the film. There are so many little things that players are getting away with that is absolutely impacting the game to the detriment of the product."</p><p>Yet some players aren't completely down on the performances of the replacements.</p><p>Patriots receiver Deion Branch noted all the controversy about officiating throughout the league.</p><p>"But I think the bigger picture is that we've all got to understand that, hey, they're making those calls on both sides of the ball," Branch said. Stephen Colbert is dusting off his camouflage suit.</p><p>The comedian will broadcast two special episodes of Comedy Central?s ?The Colbert Report? to celebrate the end of combat operations in Iraq and to honor returning troops.</p><p>On Sept. 8 and 9, the show will fill its audience with Iraq War veterans and active-duty service members. Others will be beamed in via satellite from Iraq, Afghanistan and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.</p><p>?The Colbert Report,? which likes to parody over-the-top cable news graphics, is calling the episodes ?Been There, Won That: The Returnification of the American-Do Troopscape.?</p><p>Guests will include Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Jim Webb and the U.S. military commander in Iraq, Gen. Ray Odierno.</p><p>Odierno famously shaved Colbert?s head ? on President Obama?s orders ? when the comedian broadcast four episodes of the show from Baghdad last year. On that visit, Colbert donned a camouflage suit and reported from a desk supported by sand bags.</p><p>One of those Iraq episodes earned the show an Emmy nomination for writing for a variety, music or comedy series.</p><p>The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, which exited Iraq on Wednesday, officially was designated the last combat brigade to leave Iraq under Obama?s plan to end combat operations there by Aug. 31. Some 50,000 members will stay another year in what is designated as a non-combat role.</p><p>Though Colbert?s normal mode is satire, he?s a strong supporter of the troops.</p><p>With the WristStrong bracelets he?s promoted since falling while running around his desk and breaking his wrist, he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity that assists injured service members and their families. He is a board member of DonorsChoose.org, which is raising money for the education of children of parents in the military.</p><p>?Sometimes,?
