Developer runs WebKit on Chumby to bypass Flash

Developer runs WebKit on Chumby to bypass Flash

Things haven't been looking so good for Chumby recently -- in April, the company stopped hardware sales, and that was pretty much its bread and butter. Though the device may be well past its prime, at least it has some worth to the hackers among us. Take Huan Troung, who decided to use the Chumby as the starting point for making a temperature logger. To be fair, he ended up using the Insignia Infocast, a rebranded Chumby, and while the device was a good fit for his project, he wanted more freedom than the Flash framework allowed him. So Huan decided to run WebKit on the gadget. The result is a more app-friendly interface with support for a wide range of coding languages. Check out the video below for a look at the device running the temperature app.

Gap exists between seniors' opinion of driving ability and performance

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A new report shows that 85 percent of senior drivers rated their driving as "excellent" or "good" during a five-year period although 25 percent reported having a crash. No participants rated their driving as poor, and less than 1 percent rated their driving as fair, which points to a possible lack of awareness of safe driving ability.

The study, by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and published in Accident Analysis and Prevention, analyzed Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration data from 350 older adult drivers ages 65-91 with a mean age of 74. The drivers were asked about self-reported incidents and state-reported crashes during a five-year period. They also were asked to rate their own driving abilities at year five. The study found that self-rated driving ability had no relationship with a previous history of adverse driving outcomes, such as crashes, other than receiving recommendations from physicians or friends to stop or limit driving.

The study also found older men are more likely to have adverse driving outcomes, but that they were not more likely to be told by physicians and friends to stop or limit their driving.

"A large debate in driving research is whether or not at-risk drivers can self-regulate, and thus possibly reduce their crash risk. This research indicates that, at least for this sample, a previous history of four adverse driving outcomes has no relationship with self-reported driving ability, thus possibly indicating a lack of awareness in regards to driving abilities," says Lesley Ross, Ph.D., author of the study and assistant professor in the UAB Department of Psychology. "The majority of older adults can continue to drive safely well into old age. However, there is a group of older drivers who are at greater risk for crashing."

Driver license requirements for seniors vary by state. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety eight states and the District of Columbia require vision tests for seniors. Illinois is the only state that mandates a road test for those ages 75 and older. This means that all other states rely on seniors to self-regulate their driving.

"Testing visual acuity is not enough to predict crashes. The screenings that show true promise in determining whether or not a senior is able to drive safely are performance-based," says Ross. "Until that happens, we found that receiving a suggestion to stop or limit driving had the greatest impact on seniors self-rated driving abilities.

"Clearly, there needs to be more open discussion among older adults, their family and friends, as well as physicians. Driving is essential to maintaining independence and mobility for many older adults, and discussions on limiting driving should not be taken lightly. It is a complex issue with real implications for older adults and their families," Ross says.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there were 32.3 million drivers over the age of 65 on the road in 2008 and they expect that number to surpass 40 million by 2020. A recent study using data from the National Automotive Sampling System's General Estimates System revealed older drivers experience severe injuries and fatalities at a higher rate than any other age group.

Ross' work is supported by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging. Her co-authors are Joan E. Dodson, Jerri D. Edwards, Ph.D., Michelle Ackerman and the chair of the psychology department, Karlene Ball, Ph.D.

California Institute for Regenerative Medicine awards $5.5 million grant for project

LOS ANGELES (May 30, 2012) Patricia Dickson, M.D., principal investigator at The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed), is co-principal investigator of a project that was just awarded a $5.5 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). The goal of the project is to develop a stem cell based therapy for the treatment of mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a fatal pediatric lysosomal storage disease that causes neurodegeneration as well as defects in other major organ systems. Dr. Dickson is working with lead investigator Philip H. Schwartz, Ph.D., senior scientist at the CHOC Children's Research Institute and managing director of the facility's National Human Neural Stem Cell Resource.

For nearly a decade, Dr. Dickson's research at LA BioMed has focused on enzyme replacement therapy for mucopolysaccharidosis, a group of metabolic disorders caused by the absence or malfunctioning of enzymes needed to break down molecules - called glycosaminoglycans - which help build bone, cartilage, connective tissue and other essential parts of the body. As part of this study, she and her colleagues will begin with proof-of-principle experiments for MPS I.

"Dr. Dickson has been at the forefront of mucopolysaccharidosis research for many years, working tirelessly to help develop therapies for MPS I," said David I. Meyer, Ph.D., president and CEO of LA BioMed. "We congratulate her on her continued success, and for her role in this project which could be an important breakthrough for children suffering from neurodegenerative disorders."

"The unique aspect of this research is that it uses a single donor for the transplantation of stem cells into the body and the brain, which allows the best treatment for both physical and neurological disease and avoids rejection of neural stem cell grafts by the host immune system," said Dr. Dickson. "Pediatric neurodegenerative diseases are generally neglected in stem cell research, but stand the greatest chance of success. The high probability of success, along with the need to alleviate suffering in children, is why we believe the first applications of stem cell therapies should be for these kids."

Dr. Schwartz, Dr. Dickson and project collaborators are working to address two critical issues in the development of a therapeutic candidate based on stem cells: that early intervention is not only required but is indeed possible in this patient population, and that the concept of immune tolerance is also required, where the immune system is trained to attack only real threats in the body but not the body's own cells or tissues.

To date, there is still a significant unmet medical need to better impact and prevent the neurodegenerative processes in this disease. If successful in MPS I, this technique can be expanded to help treat other neurodegenerative disorders due to lysosomal storage.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand: Expanding Opportunities For Our Heroes Here At Home

This Memorial Day, as we pay tribute to all the brave heroes we have lost fighting for our country, we must also remember the debt we owe to those veterans who return home.

One of the greatest challenges our returning vets face is finding employment here at home. While too many Americans are struggling in this economy, it's particularly difficult for our young vets. Currently, more than 12 percent of our veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are unemployed.

This is unacceptable. The skills our veterans possess are unique and their work ethic is unparralleled but translating that service to a resum? for civilian employers continues to be a challenge. That's why I was proud that Congress came together last year to pass the bipartisan VOW To Hire Heroes Act. This law will give our vets the tools and resources to help them market their incredible skills to employers so they can land a job, support their family and pursue their career goals.

But there's still more we need to do.

First, we must improve and streamline the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), which provides job training and education to our returning vets in addition to hands on assistance with resum?-writing and interview skills.

Under the VOW to Hire Heroes Act, we made TAP mandatory for all active servicemembers. It's an incredibly effective resource but to improve its effectiveness, we need to expand and streamline it by passing the TAP Modernization Act so we can give our vets and their families the chance at success they deserve.

In addition, we must improve the education opportunities that our veterans are getting through the GI Bill. While the GI bill is a well-deserved ticket to higher education for our vets, we need to make sure that when veterans are taking advantage of it, that schools are not taking advantage of them.

The Military and Veterans Educational Reform Act will strengthen the Post-9/11 GI Bill by ensuring that educational institutions receiving assistance through the VA and Defense Department meet commonsense requirements and provide critical information to potential students. It will also call on state agencies to conduct greater education and outreach activities to assist our veterans in making informed career decisions.

Finally, we must continue to ease the hiring process for veterans. Currently, veterans are held back by the bureaucratic red tape of the federal certification process that prevents them from immediately applying for many jobs they are qualified for.

To speed up the credentialing process, I am pushing for the Veteran Skills to Jobs Act. The bill would require agencies to proactively recognize relevant military training and skills when certifying veterans for federal occupational licenses.

While these bills are not a silver bullet, my hope is that collectively, they will ease the transition for our young veterans so that they can enter the workforce here at home more easily so we can bring down the alarming unemployment rate among our young vets. We must do everything we can to enable them to fulfill their full potential. It's the least we can do to begin to repay the debt we owe these brave young Americans who answered the ulitmate call to service for our country.

PhishGuru

Businesses can use PhishGuru (from $10 per user for a 25-person annual license; volume discounts apply), a software-as-a-service offering from Wombat Security Technologies, to train their employees to recognize malicious emails that arrive in their inbox. Malicious emails with booby-trapped attachments or links to suspicious websites flood user inboxes daily. While businesses are investing in spam filters and advanced scanning tools to prevent these messages? from showing up in the inbox in the first place, it's also important that regular users be alert and recognize the malicious few that still make it through. After all, just one user opening a loaded Word document can compromise the entire company.

Security experts emphasize the importance of user awareness training, but they also acknowledge that the common classroom-style of telling users what they shouldn't do is not very effective. This is where PhishGuru's simulations make a difference. The service sends out mail specially crafted to mimic the kind of malicious messages employees are likely to see on a daily basis. If the employee falls for the trick and clicks on the link or opens the attachment, the service displays a message explaining that it wasn't a legitimate message and identifies the suspicious elements that should have given away that message was a phishing attack. Wombat meets the security needs for a small business by offering relevant phishing simulations on an affordable and easy-to-use platform, making PhishGuru our Editors? Choice in antiphishing products.

While employees are getting real-time training, administrators can also monitor the overall performance and test effectiveness from the campaign management portal. This way, the administrator can identify the people who are learning and not learning and also identify which types of malicious emails users may need additional training to recognize.

Pricing is on a per-user basis and gives businesses an annual subscription to send out as many campaigns as desired throughout the year. While a 25-user license would start at about $10 per user, per year, the price would scale down as more users are added, according to Wombat Security. ??

Finding a Phishing Hole
I didn't realize just how hard it would be to set up the pool of users to participate in the test. Businesses planning on running PhishGuru will need to work very closely with IT before attempting the project. It is not something that can be done on the fly, especially if there are spam filters and other Email security products already in place.

My original plan was to pull together a list of my PCMag Labs colleagues to test the service (and their phish smarts!). Wombat said I would need to whitelist the domain that would be sending the simulated messages within Postini, which we use for our mail security. It turns out our in-house setup uses a lot of custom rules along with Postini's filters, so setting up this test would have required our IT team to manually tweak settings on each account being tested.

Our IT head honcho had some post-test concerns, as well. What if the people in the test forgot the simulation was finished and clicked on a "real" malicious message, thinking it was one of the PhishGuru tests? IT would have to deal with the cleanup.

Wombat assured me that it was possible to test across multiple domains, so we toyed with the idea of using personal email addresses, like the ones on Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail. However, I was concerned the test messages may get trapped by the spam filters on various Webmail services.

In the end, I wound up setting up a basic mail server by installing Postfix on an Amazon EC2 instance and created ten user accounts.

Baiting the Hook
The simulations are called "campaigns" in the PhishGuru world and are created using an online management portal. A new customer signs up for PhishGuru online or by contacting Wombat directly. The company currently offers a free simulation campaign, which is one email template sent to a group of users for one day. For the purpose of this review, I worked with Wombat to set up multiple campaigns over the space of one week.

After I received my account information, I logged into the management portal at phishguru.com and had the option to "Create New Campaign." At this point, I could create my test pool by uploading a comma-delimited file containing names, email addresses, and the name of the department for each test account. PhishGuru automatically created groups based on the email address, allowing me to keep track of results by group. An administrator could tell, for example, if the HR group was doing better or worse than Marketing in detecting phishing mail.

I went through the five-step process, deciding the users who should receive the phishing emails, selecting the type of email I would like to use, picking an email template and customizing it, choosing and customizing the training material to display, and scheduling when the messages will be sent. Once the campaign is created, a "test" message is sent to the administrator's account to verify it looks correct. I clicked on a confirmation link in the test mail to verify the test message.

Blair says feared fight with Britain's media barons

LONDON (Reuters) - British leaders have no choice but to court powerful media barons such as Rupert Murdoch or risk savage press attacks which are "full on, full frontal, day in, day out," former Prime Minister Tony Blair told an inquiry on Monday.

Interrupted by a heckler who accused him of being a war criminal for supporting the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Blair paused briefly before continuing calmly to justify his ties to Murdoch with whom he developed a close friendship.

An unwillingness to take on the press in Britain has been cited by many as the reason a culture of illegality and phone hacking came about at Murdoch's tabloids, but Blair told the inquiry into media standards that he had had little choice.

He could either risk being torn apart by what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media, or use them to get his policies implemented.

He never agreed a deal with Murdoch, he said, and only became godfather to his daughter after he left office. Calling the mogul three times in the days before the invasion of Iraq was also not particularly odd, he added.

"With any of these big media groups, you fall out with them, you watch out, because it is literally relentless and unremitting once that happens," Blair, looking tanned and smart in a navy suit and white shirt, told the inquiry.

"My view is that that is what creates this situation in which these media people get a power in the system that is unhealthy. I took the strategic decision to manage this and not confront it but the power of it is indisputable."

Blair, whose reputation for obsessive media management brought him so close to Murdoch that the tycoon would joke about their love making, said he became increasingly concerned about the unhealthy relationship between the media and politicians.

Blair is the most senior politician to date to appear before Leveson, an inquiry sparked by the phone hacking revelations but which has since broadened out to show the collusion between senior politicians, media tycoons and police.

"If you fall out with the controlling element of the Daily Mail, you are then going to be subject to a huge and sustained attack," said Blair, who governed Britain from 1997 to 2007 after rebranding the Labour Party.

"Managing these forces was a major part of what you had to do and was difficult," he said.

MURDOCH

The inquiry has so far focused on the close ties between Murdoch's empire and serving ministers, helping the opposition Labour Party leader Ed Miliband to consolidate his position with attacks on current British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The appearance of Blair had been seen as a potential threat to this approach, but the former prime minister was rarely troubled by the lead lawyer at the inquiry, reminding observers how he comfortably led his party to three election victories.

Describing what it feels like when a small section of the press decide to go after you, Blair said: "It's full on, full frontal, day in, day out and that is not journalism in my view. That's an abuse of power."

Sometimes using Murdoch's first name, Blair said it had been clear that the proprietor called the shots in his media empire, and not his newspaper editors. The two later became so close that having stepped down as prime minister, Blair became a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace at a ceremony on the banks of the river Jordan.

"Blair led the way in having no shame about courting Murdoch," said Ivor Gaber, professor of political journalism at City university. "He set the style and the standard and if you regard Cameron as the 'heir to Blair' then it's not exactly surprising that he followed suit."

Murdoch's papers also supported Blair in his unpopular decision to join the United States in the invasion of Iraq.

With anger still running high in Britain over Blair's role in the war, a protestor broke into court 73 to harangue him, entering through a supposedly secure entrance to stand between Blair and the chairman of the inquiry, Lord Leveson.

"This man is a war criminal," he yelled, as security guards tried to drag him from the court. Another protestor hit Blair's chauffer-driven black Range Rover with an egg as he later left the court.

"I'd forgotten just what a convincing, classy liar Blair is," one observer said on Twitter. "Not so much a testimony as a masterclass."

Blair set the tone for his relationship with Britain's press when, before his first election victory in 1997, he flew to Australia in 1995 to speak before a gathering of Murdoch's executives who had previously used their British tabloids to vilify his Labour Party predecessors.

The decision, mocked by rivals as an act of homage to the all-powerful media boss, infuriated much of his left-of-centre party who saw the Australian-born tycoon as a right-winger who had helped to keep them out of power for years.

But Blair's speech received a standing ovation and Murdoch indicated for the first time that he could be willing to switch the allegiance of his newspapers to the Labour Party.

"If our flirtation is ever consummated Tony then I suspect we will end up making love like porcupines, very, very carefully," he told him.

Insight: Hedge funds find ways to trade euro misery

BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two decades ago, George Soros rose to fame and fortune on his now-historic trade in which he took on the Bank of England and shrewdly wagered on a devaluation of the British pound.

But it's unlikely the current European monetary crisis and worries about Greece's potential exit from the euro zone will give rise to an investing legend like Soros, who made $1 billion in 1992 by betting on a decline in the price of the pound.

Instead, there are a multitude of strategies to play Europe's troubles, and many different participants, hedge fund managers say.

"There is not room for one player to have such impact," said John Brynjolfsson, whose California-based Armored Wolf hedge fund has been betting against the euro for quite some time. "Financial markets are so much bigger today."

A spokesman for Soros, who last year converted his Soros Fund Management to a family office and stopped managing money for outside investors, could not be reached for comment.

The euro zone crisis has gone on for so long it is difficult for investors to pinpoint an entry and exit point for a trading strategy. Positions and hedges require constant adjustment, making it difficult to come up with a single big-winning trade.

"It's unlikely in Europe, because the way Europe works is incremental crisis, incremental recovery," London-based Robert Marquardt, founder of fund of hedge funds firm Signet, said.

Brynjolfsson and several other U.S. money managers who are trying to profit from Europe's misery say they expect the current crisis to produce a lot of winners.

So far this year, the euro is down 3.3 percent against the U.S. dollar.

Money managers say it's hard to swing for the fences the way Soros did because institutional investors are far more squeamish about having too much money riding on any single trade.

There is also heightened sensitivity from pensions and endowments about taking up an investment strategy that might spark political outrage from European leaders.

Another thing working against the rise of a new Soros is that trading the euro zone, or even the fallout from a Greek exit, is much more complicated than betting against a single currency.

Money managers are trading the euro zone crisis by trading currencies, wagering on the direction of bank stocks or using derivatives like credit default swaps to bet on potential corporate and bank failures.

Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn recently said he is bullish on gold and gold miners, in part because of concern about the fallout from a euro zone meltdown.

Some managers are even going both short and long on different European sovereign debt, depending on their views of the financial stability of different countries.

Adam Fisher, manager of the $320 million Commonwealth Opportunity Capital hedge fund, noted that Soros faced a "single country, not 17 different countries, one decision maker, not 17."

Fisher's fund, which has more than 80 percent of its money invested in Europe, is taking a somewhat contrarian position by owning the European sovereign debt of Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.

TRADING GREECE'S EXIT

Hedge fund managers point out that given the up-and-down nature of the euro zone crisis, most hedge funds have been in and out of trades or forced to adjust positions depending on the changing political winds.

Earlier this year, for instance, it looked like concern about Greece exiting the euro had passed. But with the recent results of the Greek election at odds with the austerity measures demanded by its currency partners, the risk of a Greek departure from the euro zone has risen dramatically.

Recently, Fisher said his Los Angeles-based fund had reduced the size of some of its more bullish sovereign debt trades because he believes there will be "violent" market swings this summer.

"It is going to be incredibly difficult to manage risk through that environment," said Fisher, whose fund was up 8.8 percent through April. "I don't think hedging will do anything. The way you hedge, is you sell. You don't subtract risk by adding risk."

One way to profit from any greater swings in markets would be to play the spread between European and U.S. volatility indexes, Barclays Capital equity-linked strategists say. The European index should rise faster than the U.S. one.

Brynjolfsson, a former top portfolio manager for bond mutual fund firm Pacific Investment Management Co, is betting on Greece exiting the euro. He said it will be hard for European leaders to take the necessary steps to appease the Greek government without infuriating politicians in other euro zone countries.

"As the wheels began falling off the bus, we adjusted to have a short bias and that has worked out," said Brynjolfsson, whose $750 million hedge fund is up 2 percent this year, largely on its short bet against the euro.

Some managers are even preparing for the possibility other countries will exit the euro zone.

One such trade involves taking a long position in Italian government debt denominated in U.S. dollars, and a corresponding short position in the debt denominated in euros, one hedge fund investor familiar with the strategy said. The belief is that if Italy is forced out of the euro - or the threat of that possibility grows - the U.S. dollar denominated portion will outperform.

Axel Merk, president and chief executive officer of Merk Investments, an investment advisory firm that specializes in currencies, said the growing problems with Greece and the euro zone led him recently to dump all the euros in his $517 million Merk Hard Currency Fund, which is up 2.29 percent for the year.

Merk now favors the Singapore dollar, which has climbed 1.34 percent since January.

Ray Dalio's $120 billion Bridgewater Associates gained 23 percent in 2011 in part because of profits made from a series of European bets, said a person familiar with the Westport, Conn.-based fund, who declined to discuss specifics. In a recent interview with Barron's, Dalio said European banks "are now over-leveraged and can't expand their balance sheets" and European nations "don't have enough buyers of their debt."

Dalio may be the U.S. money manager who comes closest to rivaling the Soros of two decades ago. His hedge fund is the industry's largest and he is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers.

RELATIVE VALUE

Among the ways funds are playing the European turmoil, some are betting against the fortunes of Spanish and Italian banks instead of simply focusing on sovereign debt.

John Paulson, among others, bets against European sovereign debt as a way to hedge the overall portfolio of his Paulson & Co hedge fund firm.

Daniel Loeb's Third Point fund put on a long position in Portuguese sovereign bonds in the first quarter because the New York-based manager believed the nation is in better shape than others in the euro zone.

"Portugal's debt profile is more consistent with Italy's than Greece's, its banks are substantially healthier than Spain's, and its government has enacted more aggressive labor reforms and is more stable than regimes in both countries," Loeb wrote in a May 16 investors' letter seen by Reuters.

So-called relative value trading - which involves trying to profit from a mispricing between a pair of related securities - has proved popular in this crisis as managers refrain from directional bets, prime brokers and hedge funds say.

Firms such as Boaz Weinstein's New-York-based Saba Capital and Yan Huo's London-based Capula Investment Management are among the shrewdest names in the sector, with both funds performing well amid market turmoil.

"The thing about Europe is that everything you want to do is a relative value trade. A month from now Greece could be out of Europe, or everything could be OK, you just don't know, so you have to be on both sides of the trade," Signet's Marquardt said.

If nothing else, the European crisis is forcing managers to keep coming up with new strategies to trade. One might say it has almost become an incubator for hedge fund managers to stretch their investment acumen.

Merk said he might look again at Europe if the political and financial situation becomes clearer. But he would likely do it a bit differently.

"If there is clarity in the process again, then we will certainly look at Europe again," he said. "But not through Greek debt, but through German bills."

Romney has big lead over Obama among military veterans

A new Gallup poll shows Mitt Romney leading President Obama by 24 points among military veterans, essentially accounting for Obama's 'gender gap' among men. But as the number of vets declines, the GOP's advantage here may dwindle.

On this Memorial Day weekend, Mitt Romney apparently is getting a big boost from US military veterans.

Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has a big lead over incumbent Barack Obama among vets ? 58 percent to 34 percent, according to new Gallup survey. In essence, they?re the reason Obama faces any ?gender gap? among men. Among nonveteran men, Gallup finds, Obama has a four-point edge, and they?re essentially tied (46-46 percent) among all registered voters.

It?s an important group. Veterans make up 13 percent of the electorate (24 percent of all adult men). ?And although a dwindling percentage of Americans have served in the armed forces since the end of the draft in 1973, they?re an important part of the GOP?s base. In 2008, Sen. John McCain beat Obama among veterans by 54-44 percent.

In Pictures:?The Next Mission: Veterans Returning Home

During his time in office, Obama as commander-in-chief has made a strong effort to show support of the troops ? both active duty forces and especially those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and now face struggles with war injuries (including post-traumatic stress) as well as a struggling economy making it difficult for some to find civilian work.

"We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us," Obama said in his weekend radio address. "By making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect."

Why veterans are so strong in their preference for the Republican presidential candidate is not entirely clear, Gallup concedes.

?Previous Gallup analysis?has suggested that two processes may be at work,? writes Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport in his analysis. ?Men who serve in the military may become socialized into a more conservative orientation to politics as a result of their service. Additionally, men who in the last decades have chosen to enlist in the military may have a more Republican orientation to begin with.?

Several closely watched states in the election have large blocs of military voters, the Associated Press notes. Florida, home to several military installations, has more than 1.6 million veterans, according to the Veterans Administration. Pennsylvania has nearly 1 million veterans, while Virginia and North Carolina each have about 800,000 veterans living in their states.

Like much of their respective generations, neither Romney nor Obama has served in the military. This will be the first election since World War II in which neither major-party candidate is a veteran. Among GOP contenders, the major exception this year has been Ron Paul, who served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force.

?Barring unforeseen developments such as the re-institution of the military draft, the proportion of the male population in this country that will have served in the armed forces will decrease in the years ahead as the older population dominated by veterans dies off,? Newport writes. ?These data suggest that Democrats could get an overall boost from this demographic phenomenon as these apparently reliable Republican voters become a smaller and smaller proportion of the population.?

Tax could cost UBS up to 10 pct of Europe assetseShareholder ...

ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS AG (VTX:UBSN.VX - News) could see up to 10 percent of its European assets of 300 billion Swiss francs ($312.52 billion) moved out due to pressure to clamp down on untaxed accounts, the head of the wealth management business was quoted as saying on Saturday.

"We have been losing assets in Europe for many quarters, around 10 billion francs to date," Juerg Zeltner told the Finanz und Wirtschaft newspaper in an interview.

"And we expect further asset outflows going forward, in the region of 12 to 30 billion francs. That's a bitter pill to swallow. We are able offset this erosion thanks to strong growth in new markets."

Zeltner said UBS had assets under management of over 300 billion francs in Europe, over 170 billion francs in Asia, around 110 billion francs in emerging markets and 130 billion in Switzerland.

"Banks that are focused largely on the European cross-border business are having a much tougher time," he said.

After mounting criticism of its tradition of strict bank secrecy, Switzerland has agreed to do more to help foreign governments hunt tax evaders and has signed deals with Germany, Britain and Austria to levy punitive taxes on undeclared assets held in its banks and a withholding tax on future client income.

Zeltner said he did not expect a mass exodus of clients once the deals come into force, in theory in 2013, although the German deal still faces some opposition from the Social Democrats.

"The lion's share of the German money leaving the bank will go to the tax authorities. There is no evidence of clients taking their money out of the country as they did in the U.S. case," he said.

UBS paid a big fine and handed over details of more than 4,000 clients to U.S. authorities in 2009 to settle allegations it helped wealthy Americans dodge taxes.

"I see no indication that assets are being moved to Singapore or Hong Kong," Zeltner added.

UBS posted strong money flows into its flagship private bank in the first quarter, underscoring its appeal as a safe haven for the savings of the world's wealthy.

Switzerland's biggest bank, scaling back its risky investment bank which suffered huge losses in the credit crunch to focus on private banking, said the unit won a net 6.7 billion francs in fresh assets and hiked margins.

UBS is also trying to recover from a rogue trading scandal involving London-based Kweku Adoboli, accused of unauthorized deals that cost the bank $2.3 billion.

The rebranding is anticipated to add an exponential boost to the company?s already significant achievements in business process outsourcing; it aims to set it apart from the crowd of call centers and BPO firms in the country. ?Staff Virtual is a dynamic and forward-thinking company focused on high-touch customer service unparalleled in the industry,? says Roger Cox, CEO of Staff Virtual, ?We think our new brand reflects this, and is a significant marketing achievement.?

After impressive organic growth in 2012, Staff Virtual recognized the need to redefine its position in the market and revitalize its platform in order to achieve its ambitious future expansion plans. The project included redefining the brand positioning and the creation of a new logo, marketing materials, website and a social media identity. The new logo strikes a balance between simplicity and uniqueness. The new brand highlights Staff Virtual?s strengths in outsourcing to Philippines, customer support, IT services, and employee leasing, to name a few. Clients old and new will be delighted to see the improvements to the website and marketing materials, and establishing a more dynamic social media presence will help to make the company more accessible to a wider audience.

The firm?s name is already easily recognizable to its sizable client base and encapsulates its uniqueness over other outsourcing companies in the Philippines. Ike Stranathan, Founder and President of Staff Virtual, said ?We?re leaders, not followers in this market, and we have lead by putting our customers, and our employees first. We really have a great corporate culture, and we consider ourselves more family than co-workers. We wanted our new brand to show that?.
