'Wrath Of The Titans': The Reviews Are In!

The 3-D may be a step up from 'Clash of the Titans,' but critics are panning the sequel as 'relentlessly mechanical.'

If you've read any Greek mythology, you know that after the Titans' clash comes their wrath. Two years have passed (10 years in movie time), and Sam Worthington is back as Perseus to once again save humanity from the gods who would destroy it.

The makers of the Greek sequel (Greequel?) have cleaned up the messy 3-D from "Clash of the Titans," but according to most critics, "Wrath of the Titans" doesn't do much else to improve upon the original.

Here is our roundup of what the critics are saying about "Wrath of the Titans."

The Story
"Now widowed, Perseus is living as a fisherman and raising his son, Helius (John Bell). But upheaval lurks when he's approached by Zeus for help. Apparently, humanity isn't as devoted to worshiping the gods as they were, and the pantheon is in danger of losing its immortality. Armageddon looms. Perseus initially avoids entering the fray, but soon he's thrust into a struggle involving Hades and Ares, who have joined forces and captured Zeus, aiming to siphon off his godly powers." — Claudia Puig, USA Today

Sam Worthington
"Maybe it's just my imagination, but Sam Worthington seems to be getting slightly less stiff as an actor. He now smiles occasionally, and he's at least risen to the soulful inexpressiveness of the young Ryan O'Neal. For a movie like 'Wrath of the Titans,' which is basically 'Gladiator' crossed with 'Lord of the Rings' crossed with a special-effects demo reel (call it 'Lord of the Rinky-Dink'), he's the perfect actor. And that's because he never threatens to overshadow all that fire." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Action
"But this is a movie in which whole sequences consist of nothing but guys fighting stiff computer images. Such scenes would be boring even were they done well, but these scenes aren't done well. There's an elaborate sequence inside a labyrinth-like cave, in which the stone walls and floors are constantly shifting. But even this has no impact, because we can practically see it on a computer screen." — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The 3-D
"I should have added that the movie is in 3-D. This is not a help. 'Wrath of the Titans' is to begin with a dusty, murky pictorial confusion, not helped by dim underworld scenes, and although I'm sure the focus must be excellent, it had an imprecise feeling to me. Then the 3-D glasses did their bit to reduce the light level from the screen, and unlimited clouds of smoke, dust and sand were generated by the explosions." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The Final Word
"Serving up more action and better visual effects and 3-D than the 2010 'Clash of the Titans,' along with a barely-there screenplay that merely functions to notify Perseus which enemy or monster he should hack or skewer next, this is a relentlessly mechanical piece of work that will not or cannot take the imaginative leaps to yield even fleeting moments of awe, wonder or charm." — Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter

Pork: Did Leviticus 11:7 Have It Right? ? Dr Akilah El ? Celestial ...

?By?Dr. Mercola

Levitical guidelines label the pig an ?unclean? animal, and prohibit the consumption of pork.

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, there may be good reason to carefully consider your decision to include pork as part of your diet, as despite advertising campaigns trying to paint pork as a ?healthy? alternative to beef, research suggests it may be hazardous to your health on multiple levels.

Pork consumption has a strong epidemiological association with cirrhosis of the liver ? in fact, it may be more strongly associated with cirrhosis than alcohol (although some have questioned the studies that indicate this, and point out that countries with high pork consumption tend to have low obesity rates.)

Other studies also show an association between pork consumption and liver cancer as well as multiple sclerosis.

What?s behind this data?

Most U.S. Pigs are Fed Grains, Making Them High in Inflammatory Omega-6 Fats

One contributing factor is the diet upon which the pigs are raised, which will impact the level of polyunsaturated omega-6 fat it contains.

Too many?polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs)?contribute to chronic inflammation, which causes all sorts of problems over the long-term. Inflammation is at the source of just about every chronic disease we see today.

Most pigs raised in the United States are fed grains and possibly seed oils, which dramatically increase their omega-6 content, as well as the highly inflammatory byproduct of omega-6 fatty acid metabolism: arachadonic acid. According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, lard from pigs fed this type of diet may be 32 percent PUFAs. On the other hand, lard from pigs raised on pasture and acorns had a much lower PUFA content, at 8.7 percent, while those fed a Pacific Island diet rich in coconut had even less, only 3.1 percent.i

About one third of the staff at Mercola.com is based in the Philippines where pork is a very popular part of their diet. However, unlike the U.S. in which most of the pigs are fed grains, most of the pig diet in the Philippines is vegetable based. My staff tells me that there is a dramatic difference in the taste. So it is possible that many of the adverse consequences being ascribed to pork may be related to the pigs? diet.

As reported by?Dr. Paul Jaminet, a trained astrophysicist and his wife Shou-Ching, a Harvard biomedical scientist, who together authored the book Perfect Health Diet:

?So the omega-6 content can cover a 10-fold range, 3% to 32%, with the highest omega-6 content in corn- and wheat-fed pigs who have been caged for fattening. Corn oil and wheat germ oil are 90% PUFA, and caging prevents exercise and thus inhibits the disposal of excess PUFA. Caging is a common practice in industrial food production.?

Consumption of this PUFA-rich meat may very well be a factor in liver disease, as studies show feeding mice corn oil (rich in omega-6) and alcohol (which is metabolically similar to fructose) induces liver disease,ii?and omega-6 fats have also been linked to cirrhosis of the liver.

However, even though most pork in the United States is likely to be high in omega-6 fats, it is not the largest contributor of omega-6 fats in the U.S. diet ? this honor goes to vegetable oils. Dr. Jaminet continues:

?Either fructose or alcohol can react with polyunsaturated fat to produce liver disease. Sugar consumption, for example in soft drinks, may be just as likely to combine with pork to cause a cirrhotic liver as alcohol. But no other common dietary component can substitute for the role of polyunsaturated fat in causing liver disease.

? We would expect that if pork can cause liver cirrhosis it will also promote liver cancer, since injured and inflamed tissues are more likely to become cancerous. Indeed, there is an association between pork consumption and the primary liver cancer. ? But fat composition is hardly likely to be the sole issue with pork. Most polyunsaturated fats in modern diets are derived from vegetable oils, not pork. It seems that there must be something else in pork besides polyunsaturated fat that is causing liver disease.?

Most Pork is Consumed in Processed Form

Another reason to reconsider pork, in theory, would be the fact that most is consumed in processed form. Dr. Jaminet reports that in the U.S., pork consumption can be broken down as follows:

  • Smoked ham 28%
  • Sausage 13%
  • Bacon 6%
  • Processed lunchmeat 6%
  • Other forms of processed pork 10%

Processed meats are those preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or the addition of chemical preservatives. Particularly problematic are the nitrates that are added to these meats as a preservative, coloring and flavoring. The nitrates found in processed meats are frequently converted into nitrosamines, which are clearly associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. It?s for this reason that the USDA actually requires adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or erythorbic acid to bacon cure, as it helps reduce the formation of nitrosamines.

Meat cooked at high temperatures, as many processed meats often are, can also contain as many as 20 different kinds of heterocyclic amines, or HCAs for short. These substances are also linked to cancer. Heating meat at high temperatures also appears to increase the formation of nitrosamines, with well-done or burned bacon having significantly more nitrosamines than less well-done bacon.

Many processed meats are also smoked as part of the curing process, and smoking is a well-known cause of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which enter your food during the smoking process.

So it?s known that eating processed meats exposes you to at least three cancer-causing substances: nitrates and nitrites (leading to nitrosamines), heterocyclic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Ironically, despite this known connection, Dr. Jaminet reports that liver cancer appears to be even more strongly associated with the consumption of?fresh?pork than processed pork, which suggests another causative factor.

Does Pork Contain an Infectious, Disease-Causing Pathogen?

This is the conclusion reached by Dr. Jaminet, who suggests that an infectious pathogen in pork is responsible for the associated health conditions including liver disease and multiple sclerosis:

?Consider: Traditional methods of processing pork, such as salting, smoking, and curing, are antimicrobial. They were developed to help preserve pork from pathogens. So if processed pork is less risky than fresh pork, we should look for a pathogen that is reduced in number by processing.

If a pathogen is the cause, then it makes sense that fiber would be protective [fiber consumption is protective against pork-induced cancer]. Fiber increases gut bacterial populations. Gut bacteria get ?first crack? at food and release proteases and other compounds that can kill pathogens. Also, a large gut bacterial population makes for a vigilant immune system at the gut barrier, making it more likely that pathogens will fail to enter the body. The gut flora are a valuable part of the gut?s immune defenses.?

So while pork is arguably ?good? meat from a biochemical perspective, I believe there is enough scientific evidence to justify the reservations or outright prohibitions in many cultures against consuming it. Pigs are scavenger animals and will eat just about anything, alive, sick or dead. Their appetite for less-than-wholesome foods makes pigs a breeding ground for potentially dangerous infections. Even cooking pork for long periods is not enough to kill many of the retroviruses and other parasites that many of them harbor.

This is why my?nutrition plan?recommends consciously avoiding pork whenever possible.

Granted, the occasional consumption of pork might be fine, but it?s a risk, and the more you consume it the more likely it is that you will eventually acquire some type of infection. The pork and swine industry has been continually plagued, and continues to be so to this day, by a wide variety of hazardous and deadly infections and diseases, including:

  • PRRS?? A horrendous disease, which I first reported on in 2001, but which had been a nightmare for many nations since the mid-1980s, is still alive and kicking today. At one point referred to as ?swine mystery disease,? ?blue abortion,? and ?swine infertility,? the disease was finally named ?Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome? (PRRS), and may afflict about 75 percent of American pig herds.

The PRRS virus primarily attacks the pig?s immune system, leaving its body open to a host of infections, particularly in the lungs. Initial research revealed that the virus was transmitted via semen, saliva and blood, leaving pigs herded closely together and transported in close quarters by trucks more susceptible to infection.

However, according to research presented at the 2007 International PRRS Symposium, the disease is also airborne, making eradication efforts very difficult.

  • The Nipah Virus?? Discovered in 1999, the Nipah virus has caused disease in both animals and humans, through contact with infected animals. In humans, the virus can lead to deadly encephalitis (an acute inflammation of your brain). I originally reported on this virus in 2000, but according to CDC data, the Nipah virus reemerged again in 2004.
  • Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus (PERV)?? According to a study in the journal Lancet, this virus can spread to people receiving pig organ transplants, and according to test tube studies, PERV strains do have the ability to infect human cells.

PERV genes are scattered throughout pigs? genetic material, and researchers have found that pig heart, spleen and kidney cells release various strains of the virus.?

  • Menangle Virus?? In 1998, it was reported that a new virus infecting pigs was able to jump to humans. The menangle virus was discovered in August 1997 when sows at an Australian piggery began giving birth to deformed and mummified piglets.

If you still want to continue buying pasture-raised pork, I?d advise you to at least take a look at?this CDC map, which details areas where outbreaks have occurred, to avoid purchasing meat from a potentially unsafe location. Other than that, I would simply recommend you consider avoiding pork altogether, even organic pasture-raised versions, in favor of healthier and safer protein sources, like organic chicken lamb and bison.

Goldman Sachs CEO hunting for 'muppets'

? Jason Reed / Reuters / REUTERS

Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

By msnbc.com staff

Here?s the latest act in the Goldman Sachs ?Muppetgate? drama.

CEO Lloyd Blankfein told partners in a conference call this week that he is scanning internal e-mails for the term ?muppet? and other evidence that employees referred to clients in derogatory ways, according to a Reuters report.

The e-mail review follows the departure of Greg Smith, who left the company last week and penned a withering op-ed column in The New York Times decrying the greedy culture at the bank and alleging that he saw five Goldman managing directors refer to the company?s clients as ?muppets? in internal e-mails.

While the term muppet conjures up images of friendly, lovable puppets in the United States, the word in British is slang for a stupid person. Smith was based in Goldman?s London office and had been with Goldman for 12 years.

On a conference call this week, Blankfein said the company is taking Smith?s claims seriously and following up on his accusations about the company.

In a very public and scathing resignation letter,?Goldman Sachs executive director?Smith called the atmosphere at the massive investment bank "as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it."

"Today is my last day at Goldman Sachs," wrote?Smith, who before he resigned was the head of the firm's U.S. equity derivatives business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in a column titled "Why I am Leaving Goldman Sachs."

The public relations headache caused by the publication of the article cost Goldman $2 billion in market value in a single day.

Discuss this story on our Facebook page.

Retail Profile: North Park, San Diego's Aloha ... - Transworld Business

Big rays of sunlight stream through the large glass windows at the front of Aloha Sunday?s shop on University and 31st, in the heart of San Diego?s North Park community. A diverse hodge-podge of business professionals, college kids, and locals meander by, peering in at the careful attention to detail that has been given to the front window display, including a wooden handmade bench, an oversized vintage clothing trunk, three large wooden tree stumps converted into stools, and a navajo-print embroidered rocking chair.

Not too many young entrepreneurs in their 20s can say they?ve already established themselves in an industry as competitive as that of action sports, let alone claim both a retail and brand presence. But Hawaii native Kahana Kalama, who grew up in the surf culture and spent nearly six years working in the industry, can certainly attest to all of the above. As he sits in the oversized rocking chair on a Tuesday, watching passers by and chatting with Aloha Sunday?s co-owner and GM Billy Wickens? who also comes from an action sports background?Kalama is relaxed, but the passion and excitement behind his recent endeavor is clear as he explains the story of creating his own business. The shop, which will celebrate its one-year anniversary in May, came as an afterthought to Kalama?s brand, and has played an integral role in getting the Aloha Sunday name on the radar.

?We are a surf inspired store, but not?necessarily a surf shop,? he says. ?We wanted to create a space that would speak to surfers but that wouldn?t make non-surfers feel left out. We used to work on the brand side of things and one thing that we felt was really compelling was having a physical space and place where people can come and interact with the brand.?

From the location, to the brands the shop carries, Aloha has truly embraced the definition of doing things differently. Although they?ve encountered some criticism about the location?primarily the fact that it?s miles inland from the beach?Kalama and Wickens say that North Park?s young demographic make it the perfect location for a brick-and-mortar door. At the same time, the shop?s main focus is to reach a much broader audience than just San Diego, and places high importance on holding events that speak to a range of age groups, personalities, and geographic regions. Aloha also launched an ecommerce site ?in October, with a similar offering to what shoppers can find in store. The two owners make it clear that they support the surf industry one hundred percent, but their business model is one that goes against the grain when it comes to stocking more widely distributed, well-known brands.

?We make it a really big priority to get to know the people behind the brands, and understand that it?s not going to benefit us to sell something that is sold all over the place,? says Kalama. ?That?s a given. We can?t do what everyone else is doing.?

Footwear brand Olibert?, which is manufactured entirely in Africa and helps local communities by providing employment opportunities, is the type of company that Aloha prides itself on working with, along with Warriors of Radness, Shwood, and Pidgin Orange, to name a few. Ethical manufacturing practices as well as a solid brand story are crucial to the selection process, says Kalama: ??We like to carry products that you can actually see the value in. It?s pretty easy to look at something and tell whether its quality. It?s kind of like when you spend time with someone ? you can tell what they?re after. Are they trying to just make a whole bunch of money, or are they trying to put something really awesome into the marketplace??

The presentation of the store reflects the same thoughtful outlook, with unique POP and merchandising displays for apparel, footwear, and surf hardgoods, all positioned against the backdrop of a beautifully finished wooden wall that Kalama and Wickens built by hand, using reclaimed wood scraps from a friend?s barn in Oregon.

For Kalama, the Aloha Sunday brand has been an ongoing project, and when the?opportunity?to open a retail space presented itself, he felt strongly that the timing was right to start slowly positioning the brand in front of consumers. The limited collection of board shorts and T-shirts has deliberately been kept small to ensure an organic growth strategy in which the brand does things the right way the first time around. ?You never have that opportunity to start over again,? says Kalama.

http://www.vimeo.com/22754633

Still, the two business owners are dedicated to taking risks, and despite a consistent down economy, the process has been surprisingly easier then Kalama and Wickens had initially expected. A big reason for that, says Kalama, is the passionate crew behind Aloha, who fall into that ?Gen Y? category when it comes to thinking outside the box, accepting the idea of doing things differently, and who have given themselves permission to take a leap of faith.

?Quitting your job to start something holds a lot of people back from doing things,? says Wickens. ?If you are working for someone else and applying yourself creatively and giving yourself to a company, then you can do those same things and do it for yourself. Not that working for someone else is bad at all, but if you have the desire to work for yourself it?s totally doable. It definitely takes sacrifice. I think it?s just realizing that you don?t need a lot.?

Aloha believes that remaining humble is key, as the shop continues to develop genuine partnerships and take small, precise steps toward growing the business.

?We are this younger generation that likes to blur professional and personal,? says Kalama.? This is our life. It?s all about the people behind everything. It?s not about the transaction, it?s about the people.?

Study Shows Significantly Higher Potential for Wind Energy in India than Previously Estimated

A new assessment of wind energy in India by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has found that the potential for on-shore wind energy deployment is far higher than the official estimates? about 20 times and up to 30 times greater than the current government estimate of 102 gigawatts. This landmark finding may have significant impact on India?s renewable energy strategy as it attempts to cope with a massive and chronic shortage of electricity.

?The main importance of this study, why it?s groundbreaking, is that wind is one of the most cost-effective and mature renewable energy sources commercially available in India, with an installed capacity of 15 GW and rising rapidly,? says Berkeley Lab scientist Amol Phadke, the lead author of the report. ?The cost of wind power is now comparable to that from imported coal and natural gas-based plants, and wind can play a significant role in cost effectively addressing energy security and environmental concerns.?

Even if the previously estimated potential of 102 GW is fully developed, wind would provide only about 8 percent of the projected electricity demand in 2022 and 5 percent in 2032. The new Berkeley Lab study has found the total techno-economic wind potential to range from 2,006 GW for 80-meter hub heights (an indication of how high the wind turbine stands above the ground) to 3,121 GW for 120-meter hub heights. Given these new estimates, the availability of wind energy can no longer be considered a constraint for wind to play a major role in India?s electricity future.

Phadke and his team have been discussing their findings informally and formally with several key government agencies in India and have gotten positive responses. ?The key agency in charge, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Berkeley Lab to collaborate on several issues related to potential estimates and wind energy integration,? said Jayant Sathaye, who leads the International Energy Studies Group at Berkeley Lab.

Ranjit Bharvirkar, a senior consultant at Itron Inc. and one of the other authors of the study, said part of the motivation for reassessing India?s wind potential came from recent reassessments of wind potential in the United States and China. Both found substantial increases over the previous assessments?a ten-fold jump in China and a 50 percent increase in capacity in the United States and 400 percent by energy. Improved wind technology, including higher efficiency and hub heights, accounted for much of the increase along with more advanced mapping techniques.

The previous wind potential estimate in India of 102 GW is based on the assumption that only two percent of the windy land is available for wind power development. However, this assumption is not based on any assessment of land availability. The Berkeley Lab study undertook a systematic assessment of the availability of land using publicly available GIS (geographic information system) data on topography and land use and found a significantly higher availability of land that can potentially be used for wind power development, which is the primary reason for the higher potential estimates.

The study excluded land with low-quality wind, slopes greater than 20 degrees, elevation greater than 1,500 meters and certain other unsuitable areas such as forests, bodies of water and cities. The researchers obtained off-the-shelf wind speed data for heights of 80 meters, 100 meters and 120 meters from 3TIER.

The study also finds that the total footprint required to develop high-quality wind energy (that is, wind turbines at 80 meters with a capacity factor greater than 25 percent, which would yield a potential of about 543 GW in India) is approximately 1,629 square kilometers, or 0.05 percent of the total land area in India. The footprint is not large because, typically, only about 3 percent of a wind farm is occupied by the wind turbines and related infrastructure; the rest of the land can be used for other purposes.

The study was funded by the ClimateWorks Foundation through a contract with the Regulatory Assistance Project. Engineers from Itron Inc. and Black and Veatch contributed to the report. ?Reassessing Wind Potential Estimates for India: Economic and Policy Implications? can be downloaded at: http://ies.lbl.gov/node/473.

Five Favorite Films with Jennifer Lawrence

A little over two years ago, Jennifer Lawrence was a talented yet relatively unknown young actress with a handful of television roles (including the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show) and a few small indie films to her credit. All of that changed when, at age 20, she turned in a powerhouse performance in Debra Granik's bleak 2010 drama Winter's Bone and earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination (the second youngest ever to get the nod) for it. Her star then rose rapidly the following year, as she proved equally adept in big budget blockbusters like X-Men: First Class and indie fare like Jodie Foster's The Beaver and the acclaimed romance Like Crazy.

This week, Lawrence takes the next big leap forward, starring in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' sci-fi novel, The Hunger Games. All eyes will be on her as she takes on the role of Katniss Everdeen, the central figure of a wildly popular epic trilogy set in a dystopian future, but her previous success playing strong, young women should indicate the character is in good hands. RT was fortunate enough to speak with Lawrence about her career thus far, her training regimen for The Hunger Games, and whether she approaches all films, both big and small, the same way, but first, here are her Five Favorite Films:

Midnight in Paris, I saw this year, and I was just blown away. I think it might be my favorite movie now. I loved it. It was funny, it was inventive, imagination and dresses and all of our favorite writers. Owen Wilson was hilarious. It was just perfection.

Are you a Woody Allen fan?

Yes, yeah. But I think Midnight in Paris... I know he always gets skeptical when his movies go mainstream, but I love that one.

And then, I love I Heart Huckabees. I think that might be my favorite comedy. And I know it's weird, because every time I tell people that, they're like, "Oh, I'll have to see it." And I say, "You know, you might not like it," because it's just so weird. But I loved it. I was obsessed with it when I first saw it; I watched it four times in one week.

Harold and Maude is a classic that I love.

The Big Lebowski. I love anything by the Coen brothers, so having to choose one movie is hard, but I think The Big Lebowski.

So, for #5, I can either choose The Last Picture Show, Old School, or A Woman Under the Influence. Probably Old School, with Will Ferrell, when he goes "Hi honey, do you think KFC's still open?" [laughs]

Next, Lawrence talks about her extensive training to play Katniss in The Hunger Games, as well as the difference between making blockbusters and smaller independent films.

NASA scientist's espionage attempt results in 13-year prison sentence

On Wednesday, Stewart Nozette, a high-profile former government scientist, was sentenced to 13 years for espionage after passing secrets to an FBI agent posing as an Israeli spy. He was also fined for tax evasion.

A high-profile former government scientist was sentenced Wednesday for attempted espionage, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and tax evasion.

Former NASA scientist, Stewart David Nozette, was sentenced to 13 years in prison. In addition, he is required to pay $217,000 to the government.

This penalty delivered by the US District Court for the District of Columbia includes two cases. Nozette pleaded guilty in September to providing classified information to a person he believed to be an Israeli intelligence officer, who was actually an FBI agent. He also pleaded guilty in January 2009 to fraud and tax charges.

?Stewart Nozette's greed exceeded his loyalty to our country? said Ronald C. Machen Jr., US Attorney for the District of Columbia, in a Department of Justice press release.

Nozette has a Ph.D. in planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he helped to discover water ice on the south pole of the moon.

"He was a very solid scientist," Craig Covault, editor at large for SpaceFlightNow.com, told the Washington Times in Oct. 2009.

As early as 1989, Nozette held positions within the US government that garnered prestige and access to sensitive information. His positions included work with the White House on the National Space Council and at the US Department of Energy?s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

But prestige wasn't enough for Nozette. Between January 2000 and February 2006, Nozette used his non-profit company, the Alliance for Competitive Technology (ACT) to commit tax fraud. With ACT, Nozette made $265,000 in fraudulent reimbursement claims. In addition, he intentionally evaded at least $200,000 in federal taxes, according to the Department of Justice.?

The tax issues led authorities to wonder whether Nozette was willing to compromise his high level security clearance. In September of 2009, an undercover FBI agent contacted Nozette, posing as an Israeli intelligence officer. In exchange for $10,000 in cash, Nozette provided the undercover agent with information relating to US satellites, communications and defense.

"I?ve sort of crossed the Rubicon,? Nozette told the agent, shortly before his arrest in October of 2009. Nozette has been in custody since then.

Neither the government of Israel nor anyone acting on its behalf has been accused of any wrongdoing in this case.

An Overview Of Sony's Intelligent AIT-4 Backup Tape System

Here at Odsi we're more than a competitive online reseller of brand name tape media. We focus on all of the things that are of interest to our customers, not only in saving you money but also in saving you time.

View all articles by Mark Paul In the post-modern world of business and enterprise, reliance on technology is as useful as it is unfavourable. The constant evolution of different forms of computers and data processors means that the existing devices are no longer as durable and as long lasting as they used to be. Businesses suffer when they lose their data in this way. A crash in a single system can result in a loss of millions of dollars. Companies, therefore, spend a lot of money on buying backup systems for their data centres. It has to be kept in mind, though, that reliable and economical data protection is also hard to find. Thus, finding a good quality and low-cost backup system is just what the company would need.

Sony is today?s leading company in backup industry, which developed the world-renowned advanced intelligent tape (AIT) system. This is a technology that used magnetic tape to store and record data, subsequently creating efficient backups. AIT uses the helical-scan system, features higher storage capacity and a fast throughput speed. Data in recorded onto the tape media through the efficient ?helical scan? system. Sony has developed multiple generations of the AIT. A smart and durable choice for memory storage would be Sony?s SDX4-200C. ?

This cartridge is based on the AIT-4 media tape technology, and delivers a compact system for fast and reliable data protection. It stores nearly 200 GB of raw data. It also has the ability to store about 520 GB of compressed data. AIT technology is different from the competing tape system, because the compression ratio for AIT drives is 2:6:1. Moreover, the formulation of SDX4-200C tape cartridge is based on Advanced Metal Evaporated 2 (AME-II). This gives it a greater recording density and makes it more long lasting than its predecessors. The Sony AIT 4 drives also provide an ideal data transfer rate of 24 MB per second.

Other than their internal components, the Sony AIT4 system is also wary of serving as smart and intelligent backup system. The noise level is extremely low and the strength of output signals is not affected by the repeated duty cycles.Another advantageous feature which sets this AIT-4 system apart from the rival technologies is its fast data restoration. Data can be accessed within 44 seconds, and media loads within 14 seconds. This is achieved through the R-MIC chip, which makes it much more efficient. A fast processing data system is ideal for companies that constantly want to save time.

Moreover, Sony understands that moving through one backup technology from another can be troublesome. As backup storage demands keep on evolving, it seems as if the company would need several systems to protect their technology. This is why the AIT-4 drive makes it very easy to retrieve information from previous AIT tapes into the new one. It deliver backward compatibility, therefore the older AIT tape versions do not become obsolete. Recordings from the AIT-3 tape can be also be read and processed with the AIT-4 drive.
