    Best Movie Scenes Of 2011

MTV News counts down the most gripping, action-packed moments from 'Harry Potter,' 'Breaking Dawn,' 'Dragon Tattoo' and more.
    By MTV News staff

Rare is the moviegoing experience after which you leave the theater having loved each and every frame that flashed onscreen. Even when talking about our 10 favorite films of the year, we didn't love everything about them, just most everything. More often than not, however, a film's success and sustainability can be attributed to a few brilliantly crafted key scenes or sequences. They are the moments that make us ooh and aah, laugh out loud, cringe or cover our eyes.

In the spirit of the movie moments that have stuck with us and will continue to do so, here's our list of the 10 best scenes from 2011's new releases. SPOILERS ahead.

    10. Ryan Gosling's Airbrushed Abs Reveal, "Crazy, Stupid, Love"
Let's face it, ladies have been mooning away over Ryan Gosling since his star-making turn in "The Notebook." And although the Hollywood heartthrob always looks good onscreen, we hadn't seen him cash in on the whole dreamboat card until this year's hit romantic comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love." When he removes his fancy dress shirt to reveal a ridiculously chiseled and tanned torso, he really does look Photoshopped, in the best way possible. — Kara Warner

    9. The Hour-Long Fight, "13 Assassins"
Takashi Miike's play-out in two parts: one hour of build-up and one hour of bloody chaos. In an attempt to kill a corrupt ruler in feudal Japan, 13 samurai set the most violent version of a "Home Alone" house to trap the target and his entourage of 200 bodyguards. The result lasts an hour and engages you the entire time. — Kevin Sullivan

    8. Bridge Fight in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
The latest, possibly greatest "Apes" movie was already one of the excellent surprises of the 2011 movie season even before the film reached its climax high atop the Golden Gate Bridge. The brillz apes take on the feckless cops in a fight scene that's tense, cinematically creative and just beautiful to behold. Even more impressive than the throw-down itself is that director Rupert Wyatt manages to slip some genuine character drama into the mix without slowing down the action: Caesar, the ringleader of the simian uprising, goes from reluctant warrior to cold-blooded revolutionary when he finally realizes humans don't give a hoot about his damn dirty kind. — Eric Ditzian

    7. The Final Tap-Out, "Warrior"
Sure, there are a few clichés in the MMA-heavy familial drama "Warrior," but all the great sports-centric movies have them: an abusive/alcoholic parent, the underdog fighting/playing against all odds, the competitor with nothing to lose, etc. The difference is, of course, whether they work or not. "Warrior" works. We love a story that moves us to applause or tears, and the cool, calculated intensity that builds up to the film's emotionally electric climactic fight between two very damaged brothers does just that. That final moment where one brother finally lets go of all that anger and ever so gently taps his sibling is as brutal as it is poetic. — K.W.

    6. Birth Scene in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1"
The penultimate "Twilight" flick may not have made our list of the best movies of 2011, but it's hard to argue there was a more memorable scene — by which we mean totally goddamn bonkers — than the sequence when pregnant Bella Swan goes into labor and Edward Cullen, after realizing that a mere scalpel can't free their vampire/human spawn, goes to work on his wife's womb with his fangs. Blood is spilled, gasps and/or guffaws are unleashed by moviegoers (depending on each one's relative level of Twi-hardness), and cinematic history is made." — E.D.

    5. Sebastian Shaw's Death-by-Coin, "X-Men: First Class"
It took Erik Lensherr a long, long time to return the coin "gifted" to him by Sebastian Shaw all those years ago, but when he finally got to his moment of vengeance, the wait was well worth it. Shaw's death-by-coin remains one of the coolest scenes of the year, and ranks as one of the most memorable comic book movie deaths of all time. — Josh Wigler

    4. The Elevator Scene, "Drive"
It wasn't necessarily the most graphic scene in the surprisingly violent indie hit, but the elevator scene is the one that will stay with us the longest. Not only because it featured the best head bashing since "Inglourious Basterds," but because of the look on Ryan Gosling's face when he turns to see Carey Mulligan watching. — K.S.

    3. Lisbeth's Revenge, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Lisbeth's life is riddled with misfortune and loneliness, only furthered when she is anally raped by a "social servant." Very few women have the courage to come forth after such a gruesome invasion of space, let alone confront their molester. So, the fact that Lisbeth had the courage to do what we all wished would naturally have come to such an evil man makes this graphic scene gut-wrenching yet empowering. — Natasha Chandel

    2. Bridal-Store Bathroom Blowout, "Bridesmaids"
Disparaging sounds of indigestion are usually correlated with the uncouth ways of boys; everything from farts to exploding diarrhea. Which is why witnessing decently classy young women let 'er rip, of no choice of their own, in the most unsanitary of ways, made this scene an instant comedy classic for this year ... and all time! — N.C.

    1. Harry's Long Walk, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"
Eight films and over a decade later, it all came down to this: Harry taking that long walk of no-shame towards Voldemort, fully accepting his impending demise as a necessary means to ending his nemesis' reign of terror once and for all. Of course, it didn't shake out quite that simply, but Harry's willingness to die for the greater good was proof positive of how much the "Potter" films grew and matured since "The Sorcerer's Stone." — J.W.

Military wives turn to Bible for marriage advice (AP)

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. ? With husbands deployed or off preparing for war, some young wives at this sprawling Army installation have spent much of their marriages so far alone.

Faced with long periods of separation and worry over the next combat tour, a group of wives mostly in their late 20s and early 30s are drawn together weekly to seek spiritual support to bolster the strength of their marriages.

Mya Parker, 27, saw both sides of the average military marriage and the strain that years of combat duty can do to a relationship. She served in the Army for four years on active duty before helping to start the Lantern, a nondenominational faith group for military wives and girlfriends outside Fort Campbell, Ky.

"The military, because of the complexities of the deployment, can have more uncertainties," she said. "The reason God is the answer is because scripture says that He has never changed. From the beginning of time to the end of time, He is unchanging."

While not solely sponsored by any one church, these wives meet weekly in small, informal groups of eight to 12 at their homes to study the Bible's teachings and how to apply them to today's modern military marriage.

Parker and her husband, an Army aviator, both served in Afghanistan with the famed 101st Airborne Division, a unit that has been heavily impacted by the wars there and in Iraq since 2001. During her Army career, Parker saw deployed husbands anxious about their wives back home and wives struggling to communicate with husbands a world away.

In the privacy of these small weekly gatherings, the wives don't hold back their fears about the realities of war.

"We don't sugar-coat it and say, `Oh, it will be great, it will be fine. This deployment is going to fly by.' To be honest, it's hard and you have good days and bad days," said Mandy Costello, 29, who has been married five years through her husband's three deployments.

With less than 1 percent of Americans serving in the military, the lifestyle of a military wife can sometimes feel isolating. But when they get together, these wives speak the same language that is peppered with military acronyms as they share advice for keeping marriages intact, when sometimes months go by without kisses or hugs from their spouses.

"If you don't know what to expect, you feel alone, you feel isolated and you feel like you are the only one going through this, when you know there are thousands of soldiers deployed with your husband at the same time. It still feels like you are the only one," said Holly Klich, 31, who has been married four years to a soldier who has had two combat tours.

Besides the Lantern meetings, many of these wives participate in the military's family readiness groups, which provide information about deployments and organize events and classes for military spouses and families.

Parker said group members come from a variety of faith backgrounds, including Mormon, Catholic, Church of Christ, Pentecostal, but she said the group is open to all faiths. The group also does public service projects that Parker said aren't faith-focused and are open to anyone who wants to join them.

The Army has also been focused on improving military marriages and has invested in a marriage counseling program run by unit chaplains called Strong Bonds, which is popular with soldiers of all faiths.

Parker and others said they need additional strength from their faith to be resilient.

Parker points to the Bible's emphasis on grace, patience, kindness and forgiveness as keys to a healthy marriage, even those tested by war.

"It has made me much more patient with him dealing with what he has been through and honoring that he ultimately doesn't belong to me," Parker said. "He belongs to the Lord."

The weekly prayer meetings have helped many wives reconnect with their husbands, many who have recently returned from the 101st Airborne's yearlong deployment to Afghanistan. Parker said many wives expect a joyous reunion, but many couples have to learn how to live together again.

Vanessa James, a 30-year-old who had twin boys while her husband was deployed, said she prayed that she wouldn't be resentful that her husband missed so much while he was gone.

"He has been home for three months now and I can honestly say that I feel closer to my husband than ever before, and I think it's because I approached this reintegration with a servant's heart," she said.

With the support of other wives, Parker said a deployment can also be a blessing if women take the opportunity to grow in their faith and their marriages.

"My number one piece of advice, even if someone didn't grow up in the church and isn't a believer, is to really take the time. Deployment is an amazing time to pursue a relationship with God for maybe the first time," she said.

    Girls Hockey Coach Resigns

    Posted at: 12/28/2011 3:16 PM | Updated at: 12/28/2011 4:18 PM

Ron Hendrickson submitted his letter of resignation before Christmas, according to school superintendent Deb Hilde.

He had been on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation by the district. The district confirmed earlier in December that there had been some concerns brought to them.

Because Hendrickson resigned before the investigation findings were reviewed, the district said that no other information is public.

An investigation was finished, she did confirm.

Hilde said that two head coaches are now in place, Mike Lenich and Dave Kunz, and one of the volunteer coaches has been moved up into a paid position.

Hendrickson declined to comment on Wednesday, when reached at his home.

Fear pushes finance top of 2012's new year's resolutions ...

    New year's resolutions

New year's resolutions are usually about health, but this year has seen a focus on wealth

Fear has pushed personal finance to the top of most people?s priorities when it comes to new year's resolutions for 2012, with worries about wealth ? or the lack of it ? displacing concerns about health.

That?s the conclusion of separate surveys of 5,000 people by comparison websites Gocompare.com and moneysupermarket.com. Rising unemployment, soaring debts and shrinking pension savings have forced more of us to worry about the future.

Even if the stock market maintains its traditional ?Santa rally?, it looks as if the FTSE 100 will end the year nearly 8pc lower than it began. Nor has residential property ? the asset millions of homeowners trust above all others ? been spared from the gloom, with house price declines across most regions in 2011 and surveyors predicting further falls in 2012.

So perhaps it should be no surprise that half those questioned about new year's resolutions said sorting out their finances was the priority for 2012. John Miles, a director of Gocompare.com, commented: ?Traditionally, New Year is a time to reflect on the changes we want, or need, to make in our lives. Of those people making financial resolutions, one in four are looking to save money on outgoings.?

More surprisingly, two thirds of those questioned identified gym membership fees as an unnecessary expense and aim to save money by cancelling next year. James Clarke of MoneySupermarket.com said: ?Despite the indulgence of Christmas it seems gym membership is not high on the priority list for a New Year health kick as Brits look to cut costs. Joining a gym can be a huge financial commitment, and with many gym-goers admitting to rarely using their membership, it?s important to consider whether their hard earned cash can be used more effectively.?

Jogging around the local park is certainly cheaper and offers fresh air that is often absent in many gyms. But, as I discovered when I broke my leg last year, trying to keep fit can damage your health. Let?s hope 2012 does not prove as grim as most people expect and that next year brings pleasant surprises for Britain?s health and wealth.

Bill Maher on Tim Tebow: Effed by Jesus!

The most-well known atheist in Hollywood is at it again.

Following Tim Tebow's worst performance of the season - four interceptions thrown in a 40-14 drubbing at the hands of the lowly Bills - Bill Maher Tweeted about the faithful quarterback:

Wow, Jesus just f—d #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler “Hey, Buffalo’s killing them."

    Bill Maher PhotographTim Tebow Pic

The Tweet enraged many online, including Fox News' Eric Boiling, who replied: Bill Maher is disgusting vile trash. I can’t even repeat what he just tweeted about Tebow..on Christmas Eve. #straighttohellBill

Not surprisingly, Tebow - who was warned by a fake JC Himself that upcoming games would be difficult - didn't address Maher's Tweet, simply writing after his poor showing Saturday:

Tough game today but what’s most important is being able to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everyone GB².

What do you think of Maher's message? Did it go too far?

Sports: 'Melo makes Knicks merry in NBA opener

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks know it will never be easy against the Celtics.

Not to beat them in one game, and certainly not to beat them for a division title.

But pulling out the kind of nail-biter that's long gone Boston's way in this rivalry only reinforced the Knicks' belief that they can do it ? and even the Celtics see a difference.

Anthony scored 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and New York survived a seesaw season opener Sunday to edge the Celtics, 106-104.

"Most importantly for us, as a new team, we showed something," Anthony said. "We came together as a team. Even when we got down, there wasn't no frowns. Nobody was down. Mentally, everybody was still up about it, and we willed our way to this win."

Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and Toney Douglas had 19 for the Knicks, who led by 17 in the first half, trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter, then pulled out a thrilling Christmas victory in the delayed opener to the 2011-12 season.

Rajon Rondo had 31 points and 13 assists, nearly leading the Celtics back without an injured Paul Pierce. But Kevin Garnett missed a jumper just before the buzzer, the kind of shot Boston always seems to make against the Knicks.

"They seem to have a little swag and confidence behind them," Garnett said. "It's good for the city. It's good for the Knicks. I'm going to see how consistent they are with that, but for the most part, Carmelo played really well."

Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Ray Allen added 20 points.

Garnett finished with 15 points. He and Allen had a sleepy Christmas start, with Rondo keeping the Celtics in the game until they got going in the second half.

"I thought we were as soft as you could be in the first quarter, and then I thought we joined in to the 2011-12 season, and from that point on, I was pretty happy with the way we played," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we competed well."

But it wasn't enough against the Knicks, who withstood a costly knee injury to first-round pick Iman Shumpert to beat the team that swept them out of the first round of last season's playoffs. Shumpert will miss two to four weeks with a sprained right knee ligament.

Pierce has a bruised right heel but hopes he can return Tuesday when the Celtics visit the Miami Heat.

Even without him, the Celtics fought back to tie it at 69 on Rondo's layup midway through the third quarter. They surged ahead by eight going into the final period after Bass scored the final six points, then extended it to 89-79 on Bass' jumper to open the fourth.

Anthony, who scored 20 in the fourth, tied the game at 100 on a 3-pointer with 3:25 to play. It stayed tight until he was fouled on a drive with 16.3 seconds left, making both for a 106-104 lead. Rondo grabbed the rebound of Marquis Daniels' potential go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Celtics a final chance, but Garnett was off on his jumper, then appeared to shove the Knicks' Bill Walker away.

Coming off their first winning season in a decade, the Knicks added a defensive presence by signing Tyson Chandler away from the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and have loftier expectations than they've seen in years. The original NBA schedule had them opening against Miami, but instead they got a chance to see if they've closed the gap against Boston.

"I think we wanted to come out and set the tone early," Stoudemire said. "It's a long year, but this game was very important for us to get off to a great start."

Though the Celtics won all eight meetings last season, the Knicks have been listed some places as the favorites in the Atlantic Division, which the Celtics have ruled since their Big Three came together in 2007.

"Everybody knows how optimism kicks in before the season starts, but then once reality sets in after the first month of the season, we'll see," Pierce said before the game. "But it's definitely a possibility. I mean, they have the talent, but we have the talent, too."

Gaza PM in Egypt, 1st visit since Hamas takeover (AP)

CAIRO ? Gaza's Hamas premier was in Egypt Monday on his first trip outside the blockaded territory since the Islamists overran it in 2007, saying his meeting with his Islamic ideological mentors threatens Israel.

Ismail Haniyeh discussed Mideast politics with the leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the biggest winner in the first parliamentary elections in post-uprising Egypt, capturing nearly half of the seats so far.

Hamas is considered an offshoot of the Brotherhood.

Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie met Haniyeh at the group's newly inaugurated headquarters in a Cairo suburb.

"The Brotherhood center has always embraced issues of liberation, foremost the Palestinian issue," Badie said, according to Egypt's state Middle East News Agency.

The Brotherhood renounced violence in the 1970s, but it supports Hamas in its "resistance" against Israel.

Hamas is considered a terror group by Israel, the U.S. and EU, killing hundreds of Israelis in attacks, including suicide bombings. The West insists that before it deals with Hamas, the group must renounce violence, recognize Israel and accept existing peace accords. Hamas has refused.

Haniyeh described Hamas as the "jihadi movement of the Brotherhood with a Palestinian face." He said his visit to the Brotherhood center would confuse and frighten Israel.

"Our presence with the Brotherhood threatens the Israeli entity, " Haniyeh said according to MENA.

Israel has expressed concern that a new Egyptian government under Islamist influence might cancel Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Hamas took Gaza by force in a brief, bloody civil war in 2007, expelling forces of the rival Fatah, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel and Egypt responded by blockading Gaza. Badie criticized the blockade during his meeting with Haniyeh, according to MENA.

Egypt has been heading efforts to reconcile the two rivals. They came to some agreements last week in talks in Cairo. Hamas was represented by its supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, who is based in Damascus.

Haniyeh said during his visit to the Arab League that reconciliation with Fatah is a "strategic" matter that should not be hindered by American and Israeli objections. Israel has said the closer Fatah gets to Hamas, the further it moves from a peace deal.

Japan, China look to trade talks, debt buys (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Japan and China agreed to start formal talks early next year on a free trade pact that would also include South Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Sunday after talks that showed the deepening bonds between Asia's two biggest economies.

Japan also said it was looking to buy Chinese treasury debt, and the two governments agreed to enhance financial cooperation.

"On a free trade agreement among Japan, China and South Korea, we've made a substantial progress for an early start of negotiations," Noda told reporters after his meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao.

China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, said on its website (www.pbc.gov.cn) that the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral financial market cooperation and "encourage the use of the renminbi and Japanese yen in international trade transactions between the two countries."

The renminbi is another name for China's yuan currency.

The trade talks announcement builds on an agreement between the three countries last month also to seek a trilateral investment treaty and finish studies on the proposed free trade agreement by the end of December so that they could start formal negotiations on the trade pact.

"China is willing to closely coordinate with Japan to promote our two countries' monetary and financial development, and to accelerate progress of the China-Japan-Republic of Korea free-trade zone and East Asian financial cooperation," Wen told Noda at the meeting, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry's official website (www.mfa.gov.cn).

But the regional trade negotiations could also compete for attention with Washington's push for a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), after Japan said last month it wants to join in the talks over the U.S. proposal.

    CLOSER ECONOMIC TIES

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbors, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China and Japan are also the world's first and second-biggest holders of foreign reserves. Wen told Noda that closer economic ties were in both countries' interests.

"The deep-seated consequences of the current international financial crisis continue to spread, and the complexity and severity of global and world developments have exceeded our expectations," Wen said.

"China and Japan both have the need and conditions to join hands more closely to respond to challenges and deepen mutually beneficial strategic relations."

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.

In a statement issued after the two leaders' meeting, the Japanese government said it would seek to buy Chinese government bonds -- a tentative step toward diversification of Tokyo's large foreign exchange reserves that are believed to be mostly held in dollars.

China central bank said the two governments agreed to support Japanese businesses issuing yuan bonds in Tokyo and other markets outside of China, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation would begin a pilot scheme for issuing yuan-denominated bonds in mainland China.

The People's Bank of China also said it will support Japan in using the yuan for direct investment in China.

But Japanese officials have stressed that Japan's trust in dollar assets remains unshaken, and the scale of the planned purchase of Chinese government bonds will be small.

Wen and Noda also agreed to set up a framework to discuss maritime issues after diplomatic ties deteriorated sharply last year following Japan's arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain near disputed isles in the East China Sea.

Bilateral meetings attended by vice ministers and senior officials from relevant ministries will be held periodically to exchange views, in an effort to prevent a similar row from happening.

"On maritime matters, we have successfully set up a channel to solve problems through multi-layered dialogue," Noda told reporters.

iphone 4s Help: Wrong pass code and now iphone is disabled. How can I fix it?

About a week ago, I set a different passcode on my iphone so my little sister would stop getting on my phone and messing with stuff. Well, she tried to get into it later that night after I had changed my previous passcode (1031) to (1331. ) She tried 4 or 5 times and it said, to try again in like, 5 minutes.. Well, after the time limit was up, I typed in my current 4-digit iphone passcode (1331) and it worded perfectly. Well, the next day I got tired of typing the code in every 5 seconds, so I took it off for about a week, then last night I put it back on because her and my bf kept messing with my phone so I went under Setting and turned "Passcode lock on". then when my phone was in "sleep mode" and I turned it on it said to enter my passcode and I did. (My current passcode is 1331) Well, it kept saying "Wrong Passcode. Try again in ... Minutes" So, I tried the same passcode again and it didn't work, so then I tried my last one before that (1031) and it was also the "Wrong Passcode". I've only had 2 Passcodes for my phone because it is only about 2 weeks old, and the only Passcodes I've ever had is 1031 (my first one) and1331 (my current one) and I know for a fact that the 1331 one is correct because its my latest passcode and it worked last week.

I've already done the "Hold pn/off button and Home button at the same time thing" then plugged it into my Itunes to Back Up and Restore it like, a hundred times, but everytime I try to restore it it says:
"Itunes could not back up iphone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter the passcode on the iphone before it can be backed up."

So, my question is how can I back up my itunes or even just Restore it from scratch if it keeps saying I'm typing in the wrong passcode on my phone when it really is the right passcode? How can I remove it so I can restore my phone WITHOUT Jailbreaking it?

    Much thanks in advance!

Traditions from around the world: Other holidays celebrated in Redmond community

With endless sales, countless songs and numerous TV specials about the holiday, the month of December could easily be renamed the month of Christmas. But this time of year also plays host to a number of other holiday traditions.

From a celebration of miracles to a solemn observance of a new year, here are a few holidays that are also observed this time of year.

    FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

The Jewish holiday of Chanukah, also known as Hanukkah, is an eight-day celebration commemorating the Maccabees' resistance against and victory over the Syrian Greeks who occupied Israel and tried to influence Jews to adopt the Greek way of life in the second century, B.C.

Sholom Elishevitz, a junior rabbi at the Eastside Torah Center (ETC), said Jewish practices were outlawed during this time but the Maccabees, a small group of untrained Jews, successfully took their land back and rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Part of this rededication included lighting the temple's menorah, which was required to burn throughout the night every night, but there was only enough olive oil for one night. However, Elishevitz said the oil miraculously continued to burn for eight days.

This miracle is commemorated by lighting a candle on a nine-branched menorah on each successive night of Chanukah. The ninth candle, called the shamash, is used for extra light as well as to light the other candles.

"The menorah symbolizes religious freedom," Elishevitz said.

During Chanukah, he said food plays a significant role as they eat foods that use a lot of oil such as donuts and fried potato pancakes called latkes.

"The idea is to remember the miracle of the oil," he explained.

Another Chanukah tradition is gelt ? where children receive small gifts or money on each of the eight days. Elishevitz said this is important because a big part of the religion is educating the next generation and receiving money on each day of the holiday will get them excited about Chanukah.

In addition to educating children, Chanukah helps educate others about Judaism, Elishevitz said. The menorah is meant to be displayed in an area where it can be seen by others, such as a windowsill or next to a door. Elishevitz said this is to let onlookers see and learn about the holiday's miracle.

One way ETC ? which serves Jews all over the Eastside, including Redmond ? did this was by holding a public menorah lighting at Redmond Town Center Wednesday evening, the first official night of Chanukah. However, Elishevitz said the Jewish calendar begins at sunset, so they also lit a candle on Tuesday night to begin the eight-day holiday, which ends Dec. 28.

    A HOLI HOLIDAY

For the month of December, students at the Goddard School at 4200 228th Ave. N.E. in Redmond studied different holidays around the world and in learning about Hinduism they celebrated Holi, the religion's Festival of Colors.

Abby Yokers, the school's education director, said the holiday is celebrated with people wearing white and throwing colored powder and colored water at each other.

Holi is filled with joy and excitement and actually celebrated in the spring, but Yokers said they chose to hold their celebration this month to go with their curriculum.

The school's interpretation was to cover an entire classroom in white paper and drop cloths, fill bowls with paint and allow students to paint the room as they saw fit.

"It was absolutely fantastic to watch," Yokers said. "It was a lot of fun ? very messy, but totally worth it."

Goddard serves about 80 families and because students are 6 weeks to about 5 years old, she said the potential for disaster was high and she expected chaos. However, the kids were very well behaved considering they were in a zone with no rules except for no running (for safety purposes), Yokers said.

Each class had the opportunity to paint and as a result, the room was filled with flowers, train tracks, footprints as well as paint smears created by the students. Yokers said she even witnessed some students mixing colors.

"It was amazing to see what they would create on their own," she said.

Goddard owner Jeff Barison said the activity took the majority of the day and was an opportunity for students to get creative and use their imaginations.

He said they studied other holidays this month such as Kwanza, Diwali and St. Lucia Day. One of the reasons they have included this in the curriculum is just as reflection of their student population.

"Our school is very diverse and with that, that's why we do holidays around the world," Barison said.

He added that parents saw their children's creations at the end of the day at pickup time. One of the fathers is from east India and Barison said he appreciated what they did and the school's homage to the tradition.

"It meant a lot to him," Barison said.

    HISTORICAL NEW YEAR

While most holidays in the Western calendar fall on the same day each year, the Islamic month of Muharram changes annually.

Muharram marks the first month in the Islamic calendar, which is 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. As a result the Islamic new year is pushed back by 11 days every year and this year, Muharram began on Nov. 26 and ends Dec. 26.

Hamzah Maqbul, who occasionally serves as an imam, or religion leader, for the Islamic Center of Redmond, said Muharram is one of four sacred months in Islam. During this month, wars and disputes end and fighting is forbidden. Additionally, the 10th day of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, is particularly sacred.

"It's a day that's highly recommended for Muslims to fast," Maqbul said.

Maqbul said Ashura holds historical significance for Sunni Muslims. On this day, Moses and his people were victorious over the Egyptian Pharaoh and as a result, Jews would also fast on Ashura, which was Dec. 5 this year.

The sacred 10th day for Shia Muslims is also part of the Mourning of Muharram or Remembrance of Muharram, which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala and death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad who refused to pay allegiance to a tyrannical leader.

"This is the time where the Shia Muslims around the world remember Imam Hussain," said Jawad Khaki, a former president for the Ithna-asheri Muslim Association of the Northwest (IMAN) Center of Kirkland.

Khaki said Muharram and Ashura is a time for Muslims to gather together, revive their spirits and reflect on "the reasons why people stood for freedom and justice."

Both Khaki and Maqbul said Muharram is a solemn month and focused more on observing and remembering significant historical events in Islam's history.

Qasim Hatem, the resident scholar for the Mihraab Foundation ? which promotes a traditional understanding of Islam in a Western context in the greater Seattle area ? added that Muharram encourages people to be charitable and generous to others.

Introduction To Designing For Windows Phone 7 And Metro

    20. Dec, 2011

? ? Microsoft?s new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 (WP7), introduces a fresh approach to content organization and a different UX, based on the Metro design language and principles that will be incorporated into Windows 8. It also targets a different market than its predecessor: instead of being designed mainly for business and technology workers, WP7 is targeted at active people with a busy life, both offline and online, and who use social networks every day, whatever their background. Why Should Designers Care? First, it?s a new interface, so you have space to create and develop some new ideas for it.

Libya marks 1st independence day in 42 years (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? For the first time in more than four decades, Libyans on Saturday celebrated the 60th anniversary of the country's independence from Italy and France.

Under Moammar Gadhafi's 42-year rule, the celebration was scrapped and instead, only the 1969 date of his coup was marked.

"Today we begin the building of Libya as our forefathers have done," Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib said during the celebration. "We call on our sons to build Libya after its destruction."

His remarks were part of an official ceremony in the capital Tripoli. Thousands of people flocked to the capital from around the country in hopes of breaking bread on an 7-mile-long (11-kilometer-long) set of tables planned along Tripoli's coast as part of the ceremony. However, the dinner was canceled due to security reasons and infighting among former rebel groups who were invited, officials said.

At the National Transitional Council's headquarters in Tripoli, ministers shared a cake and mingled with journalists.

No family members of deposed King Idris, who were forced into exile in 1969, were in Libya for the ceremony. Idris died in Cairo in 1983.

Libya was occupied for decades by various nations, and it was not until 1947 that both Italy and France relinquished claims to parts of the country. The United Libyan Kingdom was announced with U.N. backing in late 1951 under King Idris.

"As the late King Idris said at the time, preserving independence is harder than achieving it," NTC chairman Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said at the ceremony.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, the prime minister told reporters that the Economy Minister Taher Sharkas had resigned due to health reasons.

The resignation comes after protests demanding that officials of the former regime be barred from serving in government.

Sharkas had been appointed to the same post by Gadhafi just two months before the longtime leader's capture and killing in October, a few three days before rebel fighters took over the capital, Tripoli.

His resignation also followed a Thursday announcement by Abdul-Jalil, in which he laid out 18 new ethics and standards guidelines for ministers in the new Cabinet formed after Gadhafi's ouster. One of the new guidelines is that a minister cannot have served in a top post under Gadhafi.

Protesters in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, where the anti-Gadhafi uprising broke out in February, have been protesting for nearly two weeks, demanding transparency and justice from the country's new leaders. They also called for Sharkas' ouster after it was discovered that Gadhafi appointed him as a minister on Aug. 18.

The new government has said it is open to some reconciliation with former regime officials, but protesters are opposed.

According to an NTC official, who wished to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to disclose internal policy, the prime minister is the one who chose Sharkas for the post. The official said it was a "sloppy" mistake and that el-Keib had not done enough research on Sharkas' background.

In his remarks at the independence ceremony, Abdul-Jalil admitted that the NTC made mistakes during the transition.

"We are not going to defend these mistakes, but it is on us as a national duty and responsibility to be transparent and learn from them so we do not repeat them," he said.

    Move over, Magneto (The Newsroom)

    By Seth Stevenson

The biggest surprise in the Republican presidential campaign in Iowa has been the relative sluggishness?until this week?of the TV propaganda battle. "The Iowa ads started later this year than last time around," Ken Goldstein, the president of Kantar Media's Campaign Media Analysis Group, told Yahoo News. "Things are only starting to heat up now. This has been a pre-primary season driven by debates, not by ads, and the campaigns have for the most part been content to let it play out that way."

The sheer frequency of the debates has kept them front and center in the conversation. And the key turning points this fall happened either on stage (Rick Perry's deflating "oops") or in news reports (Herman Cain's losing struggle against the skeletons in his closet). Still, the ads the campaigns have launched across the Iowa airwaves offer insight into each candidate's strategic approach to branding. Just as corporate marketing departments seek to shape consumers' feelings toward products, political campaigns try to position their candidates within voters' minds.

Consider Newt Gingrich's sole Iowa TV ad this election cycle.

Titled "Rebuilding the America We Love," the ad steals its stylistic approach from the "Morning in America" ad created by the 1984 Ronald Reagan campaign. Both spots feature gentle, string-and-woodwind-driven scores, and scenes of waving American flags and suburban tranquility.

But while the Reagan ad celebrated an improving national condition, the Gingrich ad is displeased with the status quo and nostalgic for the brighter days of the past. It's a bit incongruous: If conditions are so dire right now (the Gingrich ad's mission statement--"We can and will rebuild the America we love"--implies that our country needs some serious refurbishing), why does the ad emit such a calm, upbeat vibe?

Gingrich needs to fight the impression, aided by a barrage of negative attack ads aimed at him by rival PACs and campaigns, that he is volatile and prone to zany proclamations. So it made little sense to re-introduce him to Iowa with a scaremongering ad full of bleak imagery.

Instead, the Gingrich we meet is almost grandfatherly. He is filmed in a warm light and smiles as he speaks in soothing tones. The financially outgunned Gingrich has used his precious paid TV time to paint himself as a cheerful, conciliatory man of reason. He even strikes a subtly inclusive tone: When his script refers to "respecting one another," the ad shows us a white woman and an African-American man walking purposefully together.

Kansas Democratic leaders unveil jobs package

???? Kansas Democratic leaders are hoping to put more Kansans to work by encouraging casino development in southeast Kansas, thus creating additional jobs.
???? The casino proposal was part of a 14-bill package aimed at retraining unemployed workers, repairing local streets and helping small businesses weather tough economic times.
???? Lawmakers authorized state-owned casinos in four zones, including southeast Kansas, under the 2007 expanded-gaming law. Casinos are either open or close to opening in three of those zones ? including southwest Kansas ? but the state has failed to attract a qualified developer in the southeast zone. "There's very strong support in southeast Kansas for a casino project, and the Legislature needs to make some changes to the gaming law that would lower the investment threshold so we can get a project going in that area," House Minority Leader Paul Davis said during a conference call with Kansas reporters and editors.
???? He said lawmakers should reduce the minimum investment required for that zone from about $200 million to $100 million.
???? The proposal would also amend the expanded-gaming law to allow slot machines at horse and dog tracks around the state.
???? Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback told the Topeka Capital-Journal recently that he would discourage lawmakers from reopening the gaming debate in 2012, since their agenda is already full.
???? But House Minority Leader Anthony Davis of Topeka said he thought lawmakers would support efforts to attract a casino developer to southeast Kansas.
???? "I feel like there will be strong interest, particularly from the southeast Kansas legislators, to have their zone activated so they can also enjoy the economic benefits of a casino in their part of the state," he said.
???? Under the proposal, the state would earmark 20 percent of its annual casino revenues to help cities and counties repair streets and make other improvements. Another 50????? percent would be used for deferred maintenance projects at the state's Regents schools.
???? Other elements of the 14-bill package include:
???? ? The Hire Kansans First Act: Contractors or subcontractors working on state projects worth at least $100,000 a year would have to make sure that at least 70 percent of their employees on the project are Kansas residents.
???? The bill would not apply to city or county contracts.
??? ? Jobs training: This bill would offer individual income tax credits to students enrolled in post-secondary classes. Students who receive federal tax credits would also receive credits equaling 10 percent of that amount on their state income tax returns.
???? Other job training bills would offer tax credits to companies that offer apprenticeships and provide full funding for technical education programs.
???? ? Measures barring discrimination against unemployed job-seekers and forbidding employers from rejecting candidates based on their credit history.
???? ? The Kansas Immigration Accountability Act: This bill would require all state agencies, cities and counties to verify the immigration status of all workers using the federal E-Verify system.
???? Any contractor or subcontractor working on public projects would also have to use E-Verify.
???? ? A bill cracking down on businesses that misclassify their employees to avoid paying certain taxes, providing workers' compensation insurance or paying minimum and overtime wages.
???? The Legislature may take up the package when lawmakers convene Jan. 12 in Topeka.

When Boeing Co. two years ago announced plans to open a?plant in South Carolina to assemble many?of its 787 Dreamliner commercial jets, the decision triggered an outcry by the International Association of Machinists. The IAM's unofficial partner, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), filed a complaint against the company this April to block its?opening of the facility, located in a Right to Work state. Last Friday, December 9, the board dropped its action. With the plant up and running for a half year, Boeing won a "victory" -- so says CNN.?Or did it? The union, with an able assist from the NLRB, in fact, already had realized its desire to intimidate companies out of relocating or expanding in a Right to Work state by finalizing a favorable contract extension with Boeing only days earlier.

It would be difficult to find a labor issue dominating the headlines this year as much as the NLRB's suit against the Chicago-based Boeing. National Legal and Policy Center twice this May was on the case, analyzing the details and explaining the stakes. To recap: Boeing officials, after extensive market analysis, internal debate and (futile) negotiations with the Seattle-based Machinists Local Lodge 751, announced in October 2009 that it would open a second assembly line near Charleston, S.C. to build its new, fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner luxury jumbo jet. Most production would occur at the company's unionized facility in Everett, Wash., about 25 miles north of Seattle. Of the 10 jets per month rolling off the assembly lines, three would come from the 1.2 million-square-foot South Carolina plant, where workers voted 199-68 to decertify the IAM as its sole bargaining representative shortly after the announcement of the expansion.

The Machinists union saw this as a betrayal of Boeing workers. But management, having capitulated in several strikes by its Puget Sound-area work force over the previous two decades (including an especially costly one in 2008), this time stood firm. It decided that shifting a portion of its planned 787 production to a Right to Work state was a sound business decision, as workers aren't required to join a union, or pay "agency fees" in lieu of joining, as a prerequisite for keeping their jobs. Commercial carriers were fearful of the impact of further labor stoppages. Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson, in fact, went so far as to state that Boeing's labor problems could derail?Virgin's purchase of a fleet of jets. In response to such market pressures, Boeing announced it would buy and retrofit a plant in North Charleston, S.C., previously occupied by Vought Aircraft to build the $185 million per unit aircraft. The company, which paid $750 million for the complex, eagerly anticipated the opening, as did South Carolina state officials, who had added nearly $900 million in tax abatements and other incentives. Orders for the aircraft had been coming in since 2004. The project looked like an economic development winner. And not a single union job in Washington State would be lost in the process.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers thought otherwise. Being a union with a lot of clout, representing about 35,000 Boeing employees nationwide with 25,000 of them in Washington State, it took action. On March 26, 2010, the union filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming that Boeing senior executives, by situating a nonunion plant in South Carolina, had retaliated illegally against its right to strike. The NLRB reviewed the case. A little over a year later, this past April 20, the board filed a 10-page Unfair Labor Practices complaint against Boeing. "A worker's right to strike is a fundamental right guaranteed by the National Labor Relations Act," noted NLRB Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon in an accompanying statement. "We also recognize the rights of employers to make business decisions based on their economic interests, but they must do so within the law."

It was a highly questionable premise. A company's expansion into a Right to Work state to avoid future strikes would seem no more "unfair" than a union's wielding a strike threat as a negotiating tool. No matter - the NLRB scheduled a hearing starting on June 14 before an Administrative Law Judge in Seattle. The IAM by this time had filed a separate civil suit against South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley, who took office this past January, accusing her of suppressing the right of Boeing workers to join a union. Haley bitterly denounced the union in a guest editorial in the April 29 edition of the Wall Street Journal. "We don't need unions playing middleman between our companies and our employees," she wrote. "We don't want them forcefully inserted into our promising business climate." A fellow South Carolinian, Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., likewise remarked: "This is nothing more than a political favor for the unions who are supporting President Obama's re-election campaign. Unfortunately, it comes at the expense of hundreds of jobs in South Carolina and thousands of jobs nationwide."

For months, partisans on both sides closely followed the case, viewing it almost as a national morality play. Last week, on December 9, the board ended the drama, announcing it would drop the complaint. General Counsel Solomon remarked that from the start he preferred a settlement. "This case was never about the union or the NLRB ruling telling Boeing where it could put its plants," he said in a reporters' conference call that day. "This was a question for us of retaliation, and that remains the law. If we were ever faced with a similar pattern, we might well issue a complaint." The agreement, he emphasized, assures job security for Boeing employees in Washington State and South Carolina.

The board's decision to drop the case, coincidentally or not, came just two days after Boeing Machinists union rank and file ratified a four-year contract extension with Boeing reached in private negotiation the previous week. Under the agreement, the union would drop its charges against Boeing, while the company in turn would build its "737 Max" jet at its union plant in Renton, Wash., a suburb of Seattle. The deal also included a two percent annual wage increase, a $5,000-per-worker bonus, and most significantly, a commitment from the company to keep manufacturing aircraft as much as possible in the Puget Sound area. Boeing spokesman Tim Healy called the new contract "a starting point of a new relationship with the IAM."

New, however, doesn't mean better - at least not for the company. And that's how a large number of Republicans in Congress felt months before. In May, Sen. DeMint, along with Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., introduced a bill, the Job Protection Act (S. 964), to bar the board from overriding an employer's decision to site a facility in a particular state. This August, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., subpoenaed the NLRB for all documents, including e-mails and call logs, related to the case dating back to January 1, 2009. Issa stated that he wanted to identify how the board arrived at its decision to go after Boeing. It marked the first time since 1940 that the NLRB has been subject to a congressional subpoena. Finally, in September, the House, in a 238-186 Republican-majority, party-line vote, passed the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act (H.R. 2587), sponsored by Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C.,?to strip the NLRB of key powers, including the authority to order an employer to close a plant or to refrain from relocating a plant at a specific site. While the Senate is less likely to follow suit given its Democratic majority, such actions send a powerful signal to the NLRB and the Obama administration that discontent over the board's course of action is very real.

Supporters of Boeing see the NLRB's decision to drop its complaint as, at best, a qualified victory for employer and worker freedom. Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said the announcement was "good news for the people of South Carolina," but also a sign that union bosses are "calling the shots." The decision, he noted, "does little for workers and businesses around the country who depend on a fair and impartial U.S. government." Another GOP presidential candidate, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, called the outcome "a victory in a battle that should have never been fought." Senator DeMint was even more emphatic that organized labor had triumphed:

The NLRB's dismissal of charges against Boeing only after union approval of their new contract only confirms the charges were a politically motivated negotiation tactic, not a serious complaint based on merit. Unfortunately, real and serious damage to America's competitiveness has already been done. A precedent has been set by the NLRB that they will attack businesses in forced-unionism states that try to create jobs in right-to-work states.

The NLRB's Solomon from the beginning has disputed such an interpretation. This past September, he told reporters: "Regrettably, some have chosen to insert politics into what should be a straightforward legal procedure." That may be formally true. Yet it hardly can be overemphasized that each of the two Democrats who sit on the normally five-member board and constitute for now a 2-1 majority - Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce and Craig Becker - has an extensive background as a union lawyer. Their instincts tell them in cases such as these that a union's grievances are more grounded than those of an employer. Why else would the IAM be in such a good mood? "We believe the proposed extension is good for our members, it's good for Boeing, it's good for airline customers, and it's good for communities," said Machinists' union spokeswoman Connie Kelliher. "It secures a strong future here, provides top-notch pay and benefits, and really signals the start of a potential new relationship with Boeing."

On the surface, Boeing seems to have sustained minimal damage. Former House Speaker and GOP presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich called the outcome "a victory for Right to Work states."? The company?opened its North Charleston, S.C. "787 Dreamliner" plant on schedule this past June. More recently, at the start of this December, it opened a nearby facility to make interior components for the Dreamliner. The?bills on Capitol Hill to curb NLRB authority remain on the table. Congressman Issa is proceeding with his investigation. And the State of South Carolina is continuing its battle with the board on any number of fronts. Yet in the face of all that, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that Boeing secured "labor peace" at a steep price. Its contract agreement with the Machinists is a clear reminder that a unionized company's expansion into Right to Work territory can be achieved only with union permission. It's also a reminder that the NLRB, at least with a Democratic majority, all too often acts as a union law firm of the last resort.
